I was just wondering if it's possible to get LCD monitors much cheaper
than usual if you take ones that have many more bad pixels than would
normally be deemed acceptable. Does anyone sell such things cheaply?

While pondering an LCD purchase lately, I was struck
by the fact that when using a price-watch engine,
the lowest price hits were all "refurbished", and
that there were a surprising number of them.

Where do these refurbs come from? Could it be that
picky customers send back new displays with a few
defective pixels?

My surmise was that if you buy a refurb, there's a
solid chance that you'll get a pre-owned display with
obvious stuck/dead/hot/fubar pixels ...

.... but still within the maker's spec for allowable
defects, perhaps 8 per panel. But some of those may
be annoying smack dead center duff pixels.

I doubt, however, that displays with defects in excess
of the maker's spec end up in the market. Defective
pixels is a touchy issue, and if a display has an
excess amount, it would require very obvious disclaimers
that I'm not seeing.

Another LCD purchase strategy is to just wait. LCD prices
are collapsing, particularly in the 17-19 inch range.
Watching the news at: http://www.digitimes.com/
I'm wondering if some of the fabs will ever recover
their capital costs.
