Subject says it all.
I don't use it.
Kids are getting dozens a day, but rarely send any.

Can I have Verizon turn it off?
TIA

They can turn off incoming, but not out going. At least that's the way it
was a little over two years go when I had TXT messaging turned off on the 4
phones for which I'm responsible. (Done because Verizon lacks a method to
create a white list... and we were beginning to receive spam TXT messages.)

Just call *611 and ask CS to disable text messaging. The first and only
non-account based text message I received was a spam message. Calling CS
had the charge removed and text messaging disabled.

The downside is that it disables all text messages, including the ones VZW
sends when you call for the reports of minutes used or account balances.

Be informed disabling text messages also disables voice-mail-waiting icons
you get when there is an unlistened-to voice mail......on some systems.

The only times I got text messages on Verizon instead of a voicemail
indicator, it was because something was broken. Usually it got fixed pretty
quickly.

What Larry means is that on some systems (don't know which) it has been said
that the way the voicemail indicator works is by receiving a specially
formatted SMS text message that turns on the voicemail icon.

Yes, they can turn off all text messaging. inbound/outbound. Or perhaps
better, you can request that CS turn it off. It is a permanent (as much as
anything at vzw is permanent) disabling of txt messaging which also means
you won't get any bal, min, msgs as well. dr

Might be per phone model. I don't have txt msg but I get the voice mail
icon. I can also receive the free VZW txt like *min, etc..

I dunno...

Right. There was a thread about this a couple months ago. VZW put a notice
in the bills that they were changing the method of activating the VM icon
to what you describe.
