I tried a Viewsonic VP201b LCD monitor (20") and the default brightness is
set to max. for some reason so I turned it down a bit and then I could hear
a very quiet high pitched buzzing sound like a florescent lamp noise (Isn't
the backlight a florescent tube?).
I have my PC modified to run super quiet (and the room get fairly quit) so
maybe its a normal sound that most people do not really notice because their
PC is louder and drowns out the noise. After putting a lot of effort to make
my PC quiet, the monitor noise although not loud it can still be heard and
gets annoying.
I went to a store and tried to listen for the noise on the same model LCD
but the room was too loud to tell if the LCD made noise.

Does anyone have any experience with the 20' VP201b or VP201s (or any other
late model LCD) having a slight buzzing noise when the brightness ids turned
down (brightness is set at max. by default)?

Thanks,
Lou

Yes, the backlights are small fluorescent tubes, and I would strongly
suspect that the noise you're hearing is coming from the inverter
(which is a high-voltage power supply specifically for those tubes).

I have exactly the same brightness/noise problem on a 20" Formac LCD.
The hum was literally giving me a headache. It took me a about a day
to figure this out… very frustrating… but I'll take it being too
bright over listening to that hum any day.

I contacted Viewsonic and they said that there should be no buzzing sound
from their monitor. Sent it back for a replacement. I should be getting the
new monitor tomorrow (Tuesday) so hopefully it will not have the noise
anymore. Will post again after I try the replacement Monitor.

Replacement monitor arrived. Has the same exact buzzing noise problem.
Either Viewsonic customer service did not know what I was talking about or
they are pretending that there is no problem. Seems odd that the monitor
comes with the brightness set at a default of maximum and anything less will
make the monitor buzzing noise.
I also did some searching and it turns out I am not the only one to have the
buzzing problem.

Looks like I need to start shopping for a different monitor and see if I can
return this one.
