Any other lovers of Hockey out there? I watch all 82 regular season Red Wings games plus a few other games when on national coverage. Since I really took to sitting on the forums this summer without hockey, I'm anticipating I'll have my laptop setup in front of the TV watching the Red Wings and typing away. And since I don't want to belong to many many websites with their own forums, thought I'd ask here even though this doesn't look to be too active and is boarderline dead.
I always loved playing hockey, but I've never been able to sit and watch it. It's a little slow.
But no where near as bad as baseball. The game of anticipation isn't for me.
If there's two defensively minded teams, yeah, it can be slow. The league has made some rule changes over the last few years to open the game up more and make it more exciting. While unpopular, the salary cap has really added a level playing field for a lot of teams.
I played baseball from little league through college. I've learned to appreciate every aspect of the game, because there is so much going on that people don't notice.
I think there's more action in baseball than hockey. There are those who can appreciate a pitchers duel, but offense sells. There's more offense in baseball than hockey.
That's funny how perspective changes everything. I would claim hockey has more going on, but then again, I never played baseball past little league. The times I notice it most is when I'm watching a game with someone who doesn't know it either very well or at all and starting to explain why this did or didn't happen. And then you go on and on and on explaining it all started 150' away and 20 seconds before.
All sports have more going on than the general viewing public have any clue to. Consider me one of the baseball clueless.
Whats your take on season lengths? I think hockey goes too long and should only be labor day to memorial day. I think Baseball should be the other way around, but start the playoffs after memorial day. You still have to get your TV ratings in there. But think if the Rockies had advanced, Denver was under snow for the later rounds. I don't think the boys of summer train for that. Just like playing hockey into June, doesn't seem right.
I have to admit, I don't know the inner workings of hockey. I'm probably one of those that need some explanation on what they're doing and why.
I think baseball needs to shorten the duration of the season somehow. You're right. Baseball isn't meant to be played in the snow and below freezing temps. A pitcher has troubles gripping the ball, it's hard to stay limber, and hitting a ball with cold hands is no fun (the sting can numb your whole arms). I wouldn't mind seeing the season start earlier to enjoy the spring weather a little more Or maybe some scheduled double headers during the season to get all the games in, while finishing the season earlier.
All sports are about $$ now. They're reluctant to cut the schedule because they'd lose ticket and sponsor revenue.
What don't you like about the length of the hockey season? Too many games or too long of a season? It seems like they could do something about it since they play inside.
Yeah, I don't think of girls and hockey. Just toothless bearded men with sticks standing on metal edges the thickness of paper.
You should OC your SNES!!!!!
I think that mi1ez was referring to field hockey, not ice hockey...
Myself, I prefer rugby union first, then rugby league. The one day cricket matches aren't too bad, test matches are OK in small doses. If Aus. could field a competitive soccer team, I might be more interested...
Hockey is my favorite sport. I actually don't watch anything else... I play indoor roller hockey out here in CA, and i've been learning how to skate on ice. Started playing roller hockey in 97, but I'm getting tired of it. Ice hockey is about three times the price per season than roller hockey is and so it's been out of my budget. Go Ducks
I love hockey. Played it for 10 years, 8 of them as a goalie. I'm unfortunately an Oilers fan but am hoping for the Penguins or Flyers to win it because I loaded up on both teams with my office pool. I did like seeing the Red Wings beat the Coyotes tonight. It was good to see Jimmy Howard get his first playoff shutout.
As a Canadian I am brainwashed to love hockey lol, but my first love as a kid was baseball.Just because my parents thought baseball was cheaper for me to play*IE Less gear*.As I got older my interests went back to hockey, now I play roller hockey, floor hockey and if I could ever skate well enough*I play goal* Ice hockey. As for watching hockey or any sport I get bored and antsy, I far prefer playing sports then sitting there watching, unless its in a bar with a pint of beer in hand.
Yeah I prefer playing too. It's just that $700 a season plus gear can add up. That money could be spent on better things like a new pipe and muffler for my sled. I still get out on the ice a few times a year when my buddies team needs a goalie. Go Canucks tonight.
