Instead of making this a Greatest Guitar Player thread, because everyone has their own ideas as to who the greatest is or was and if they're dead today they cannot back the claims anyway.

Its always been the bestowed honor of Jimi Hendrix phenomenal guitar skills he was way ahead of his day for sure, but to me he maybe wasn't the best of all time, I have my preferred favorites which I will list in the order they rate as far as I am concerned and you guys do the same.

I'm not talking about the ability to rage through the frets, I'm talking about the ability to make the guitar itself almost communicate on its own, I know that is probably hard to understand what I'm talking about, but here goes my list.

So as far as the legend goes and the fact he is dead and cannot take the stage to compete today, the unprovable honor goes to Jimi Hendrix!

1. Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin
2. David Gilmour of Pink Floyd
3. Angus Young of AC/DC

So list your top three choices guys and gals and lets see what each other likes?

Rock guitarists.

1. badge
2. Clapton
3. Trower
4. Bonamassa
5. SRV
6. Gibbons

I have studied the style and technique of guitarists since my teens and have played since I was nine. Besides computers, guitars are my main hobbies.

* Hendrix was left handed. He was poor and could not afford a left handed guitar. He turned a right handed guitar upside down and lerned to play. Hendrix continued this his entire career. If you look at the keys of his strat, they do not point upward, but instead point towards the ground. His strat is upside down.

1. Page
2. Gilmour
3. Blackmore
4. Iommi
5. Beck
5. Felder
6. Cray
7. Clapton

There are many who could probably play more proficiently (classical players like Kottke) ... but the top 7 for me relate to songs / riffs and hits.

Hendrix played the Fender Strat upside down (see the keys on the head of the guitar pointed towards the floor.). Jimi always played a right handed strat upside down because he was left handed. Thus, the his guitar was 'strung' backwards! Psychodelic!

Notice the keys on the head of the strat pointed incorrectly to the floor. Hendrix played a right handed guitar upside down.

Trower playing a right handed strat strung properly.

Notice the keys on the head of the Strat facing upward the proper way.

I agree with Reynod, Clapton is god.

Wow you mentioned Felder. Thank you. Note: Cray does not have more hits than Clapton. However, you do know your rock guitarist. I saw Blackmore in '73. Gilmour in '74. Cray around '90. Didn't go to Black Sabbath! Saw Page in '73. It seems when I learn a song, Clapton's work is always the most satisfying. But that is just me.

Seeing as I have comfortably numb on at the moment, I will go with gilmour.

I also like what I have heard of JJ Cale who I listened to to see what the originals of the songs clapton covered were like and found he as a good style.

Another one clapton covered was robert johnson, he was a good finger picking guitarist.

Twenty years ago I got serious about the guitar. Lee Zimmer gave me private lessons for two years. Here is Lee playing Cavatina better known as the theme from The Deer Hunter.

Jimmy Lee kennett is a Rock/Blues legend in my hometown for the past four decades. I grew up with Jimmy riding our bikes chasing after his dad's snow cone truck. When I visit 'home' I see Jimmy. A few clips. Enjoy what you care to.

In the interest of not letting this thread go dead, I want to post this educational video regarding the importance of 'style and technique.' Complete concentration, hours of practice and a bag of fresh picked flowers are required to develop this mid 60's pre moon walk guitar technique. I'm practicing my late 60's 'upside down' technique and may post a video straight form the source. Let me know if anyone is interested in learning from the master. Enjoy and pay close attention to the 'teeth' used to make these incredible guitar moves.

Even though they may be a bit "poppish" and new age, I rather enjoy the guitar work of: Keith Urban (country-rock) and Richie Sambora (rock). "Old school" wise, I dig Jimmie Hendrix, Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughn.
