I have had a noise in my PC tower for the last few months. Very
annoying. It definitely sounds like a fan of some kind is on the
blink. I have opened the case a few times and listend for it but was
not able to tell if it was the CPU fan on the heat sink or the fan on
the power supply.
Finally I just unplugged the fan on the heat sink of the CPU while it
was running and stopped it. Fortunately nothing happened (like a
shutdown or something) and that didn't seem to be the fan that was
having the trouble, as the grinding/whining sound just kept on.
Figuring it must be the power supply, simply by elimination, I thought
I'd do one last Google Groups search to be sure. What did I find?
There's a VIDEO FAN as well. And when I found it on the underside of
my video card and stopped it for a second with my finger (it's a tiny
fan), sure enough, that was where the sound was coming from. The
whine stopped when the fan stopped.
I've had nothing but trouble with these Gateway video cards. This
will be my third or fourth card now. The last few died (screen just
went blank) for no apparent reason.
In the hopes that it might help someone find the cause of the whining
sound in their Gateway 700 desktop, I thought I should post this here.
