Hi,

I'm choosing parts for a new machine to hook up to my TV for watching
media files on my computer. The motherboard I'm purchasing has an 8x
AGP slot, but the card is a 2x/4x. Are the slots made to be backwards
compatible? Will the card even fit in the slot?

AFAIK, the slots are compatible, it should fit. I know an 8x board can run
in a 4x slot. I don't know about the other way around.

4x cards are compatible with 8x motherboard slots.

Well, either it will work, or it will not fit. There is no possibility of
damaging your system.

Look at this page:

http://support.intel.com/support/m [...] 009010.htm

to see most of the possibilities for keying of AGP cards for voltage
support. Basically, if you have either a 'Universal' dual-voltage card
(like the top picture), or a 1.5V card with only the right notch, it
should work in an 8x slot. If it is a 3.3V card like the bottom picture,
with the left notch only, it will not work and shouldn't fit in the slot.
