Hi,
my 3 year old 15" Sony Multiscan 100sx CRT has a refresh rate of 85Hz at 800x600. What will happen if I tell it to refresh at 100Hz when it can't do that? Will it burn out?

When I rule the world, Apple will only mean the fruit.

Setting the refresh rate higher than your monitor and/or video can handle is highly NOT recommended.

I know, but what will happen- I have been waiting for this piec of sh*t to die, but it keeps on living.

Probably, nothing much will happen.

It may well cope with the higher refresh, perhaps with a shrunken or off-center display. Or it may go blank and whistle at you.

Even if it dies, it won't be spectacular.

If you run out of the range of the monitors capabilities, most modern monitors will go into energy save mode, to protect themselves.
