I have a Gateway PIII-800 (windows 98SE) and a Radeon 9000 video
controller. In the last couple of weeks, several web sites have caused
the machine to reboot (no error messages, just a reboot). This happens
with both Mozilla and IE. It's always the same web sites, but not always
at the same spot. Could it be faulty hardware, memory overwrite?
Problem does not happen with other machines I have (including a thinkpad
with 98SE). Any clues? Thanks

A few years back there was a problem with the PIII 450 with the Voodoo
Banshee video card. Certain websites would freeze the computer requiring a
power off reboot. It happened as a result of one of Microsoft's updates and
the company which made the video card had gone out of business so there was
no driver update. I learned about it from someone who posted here that
they had identified the problem and ended up getting a replacement video
card from Gateway. This would suggest to me that the video card is a good
first suspect. Look for an updated driver first.

One other possibility could be excessive heat. Make sure all the dust and dirt
is out of the cooling fans in the system, whether the fan is a CPU fan, graphics
card fan, or power supply fan. Compressed air from a can does a pretty thorough
job... Ben Myers
