ATi used to be pretty bad, but so was nVidia...
I remember for uninstall of the Det's, delete the nvidia folder, go to
c:\windows\inf (or c:\winnt\inf) and dig out the INF file) and cross your
fingers that nVidia's installer would do the right thing (one of the side
benefits of nVidia buying out 3dfx, they must have used the same engineers
for the driver installer, after 3dfx went away, the Det installer was much,
much better)
Both are good choices now, much depends on what you do with the machine... I
tend to run my games 1024*768 with no AA, and I'm not the ubergamer that
some are...
My boxen...
P4-2.8C on i865, 9500Pro (Intel D865PERL)
P4-2.4 on i845, ti4200 (Intel D845PEBT2)
AXP2500+ on NForce2, 9600Pro (Abit NF7-S 2.0)
AXP2200+ on NForce2, 5600 Ultra (Shuttle AN35 Ultra)
Every one of them is fairly quick, each box above exceeds 10K on
3dMark2001se, and the DX9 cards are respectable at 3dMark2003 - games I play
are UT2K4, EASports F1-2002, still break out Q3-Arena once in a while, and
lately my son and I have been playing Lucasart's KOTR.
The P4-2.4 is my LAN server, and the ti4200 was an upgrade victim, seeing
that the P4 server was available, tossed the GF2MX that was in it ;^)
The uninstall process on ATi is a bit more complex than nVidia - uninstall
the control panel, don't reboot, and then uninstall the driver, reboot, and
install the new CAT's, a couple of more steps than the Forceware drivers
(for Video). The ATi drivers do have a single install option these days, if
you download the big package, but on broadband, it takes only a few seconds
more...
From a GPU perspective, I'm happy with both... knowing the configs above,
with the exception of the 9500Pro, the performance levels in most games,
along with compatibility, you probably wouldn't know the difference... the
9500Pro on the P4-2.8C is a grade above the others, granted, but even then,
it's not _that_ noticable except in extreme cases...
I've had more problems with the NForce drivers on the Shuttle and Abit
boards than I have with either the ATi or nVidia video drivers...
In the end, I look for what is the best bang for the buck when I'm in the
market for vid cards... I know with nVidia or ATi, I'm getting a fair
deal... didn't use to be that way.
