Unable to install new updated drivers for my geforce3 card. When I do load
them it crashes system and reinstalls 29.58. How can I remove 29.58 and
reinstall the new drivers with out the conflict. Have already done the
add/remove program several times, driver cleaner 3, NFR (nasty file remover)
and safe mode and nothing is working. I want to delete the .cab file that
xp keeps autoloading the driver with.

Help

Good question, dont know the answer. I do know 29.58 came with SP1, so they
are in some well protected system files/cabs.. SP2 will come with 52.16
loaded,so eacht time that will come up, even though you want to install a
lower numbered driver, hope it doesn't conflict.

Ontopic, are you sure that this autloading of 29.58 is causing the crashes?
I kinda doubt it.With me to 29.58 is always loaded too if there is nothing
else, but after that I can always seamlessly update my drivers.

Make sure you are not connected to the internet.
Uninstall through controlpanel\software and reboot.
Check if you don't have multiple nvidia drivers installed, there should only
be one entry in controlpanel\software.
With nastyfileremover almost every nvidiafile is deleted, but not all.
Go to registry and search for keyword nvidia, delete those found.
Also search for keyword nv*.* in registry.Again delete those found.
Same goes for your c:\ dir , search nv*.* and delete those found.
In your c:\windows\inf dir are the .inf files that make your system reload
the current drivers,in there could be the .inf file causing your system to
reload this driver.
In controlpanel\system\hardware should be a nvidia display driver with no
drivers installed after reboot.
Goto install new drivers and manually select the location of your new
drivers,
should be the bottom option every time.
You should get a list with the drivers available and possibly older ones are
also listed here,
so make sure you select the right one. After install you reboot.
Now make sure in controlpanel\system\automatic-update it's set to off.
You don't want to update automatic anymore,or else you get your unwanted
drivers again.
Connect to the internet again and off you go.
Norton windoctor is a good tool to remove false entries in registry.
Also before you uninstall anything make sure the items you disabled in
msconfig\startup are enabled again.

Your GF3 card is NOT stable with the latest 5x.xx drivers, which are for FX
series cards with DX9. Use the 45.23 driver for stability with your older
card.

Windows XP features two nice security additions: WFP(Windows File
Protection) and SFC(System File Checker).

It won't let you modify, delete, or otherwise compromise its files.

One of the nice air-tight features of XP that I like... until I go to
modify something.

Here's how to disable it:

The NVIDIA drivers don't determine whether DX9 is used... it's entirely
dependent on the game.

The Detonator 45.23 WHQL drivers are good for a Geforce 3, but I've
seen better performance with some of the 3x.xx's.

Hmz,i select the line in registry and choose properties, then i change the
access level.
No need to install anything this way,it lets you delete protected registry
lines.
I believe i encountered only 1 line that would not give me full access but
it's no harm
to leave this line so simply ignore such things.
Forgot that part because it's pretty comprehensive to do a genuine uninstall
of nvidia drivers.
In the end only the nv4 display driver stays resident in c:\windows\system32
dir.
But it's overwritten with the older version you are installing so np there.
Dunno if xp home has this feature since im on xp pro.
