CD-RW Drive not detected on boot-up

Hello all,

I'm having a slight problem with this Gateway PC. On boot-up (cold or warm)
the BIOS isn't picking up the NEC Model NR-7700A CD-RW drive. Changed CMOS
battery with new one, no joy. If I go into the BIOS, under IDE config
(drive is set as secondary master) and set params to auto detect and
restart, drive is detected. As soon as I do a restart, though, same
problem, drive not detected. Drive light blinks but tray won't open. Used
emergency eject hole to open tray and restarted, drive is detected.
Sometimes drive is detected, sometimes not. OK, I'll update BIOS. D/L'ed
BIOS update from Gateway site, unzipped, moved to floppy, restarted with
floppy in drive, get a "non system disk, replace disk and strike any key".
WTF, over? I've tried reseating connectors, etc. Is there a jumper I'm
missing to do a BIOS update?

Here's sys specs:

Gateway Micro ATX SAN Professional V800 CS (mfg date 6/26/01)
Santorini (?) mobo
WinXP Pro
128 MB RAM
10GB Quantum Fireball HD
NEC Model NR-7700A CD-RW (mfg date 4/2001) set as secondary master, jumper
on CSEL
Intel PRO/100 Integrated LAN

Two other things. First: When I was first called to look at this PC, I
noticed that the phone line was plugged into the LAN port! Poor user
couldn't figure out what was modem and what was LAN! Could this have fried
something? Second: I removed the CD drive and noticed PC boots a lot
quicker. Is drive on it's way to greener pastures?
Can't get to Gateway support site right now, so I'm hoping some of y'all
could help. Appreciate it!

Try a different IDE ribbon. Try jumpering it to secondary master to
match its' position. I don't think the bios is the problem, but you
might be exceeding the wattage of your aging power supply.

You have to make the bios disc "bootable."

I doubt it.

A slow boot can also be caused by poor communication caused by poor
communication or intermitant power.

Appreciate it, Fireclown,

That's the only thing I haven't tried. Thanks for the heads up. Will get
back to you.

Changed IDE cables with no joy. At this point I'm assuming it's the drive
itself. Will try known working drives (R & RW) next.
