I tried to replace a 56x CD-ROM drive in my computer with an hp CD-RW drive
I pulled out of another computer. When I tried to boot up there was no
signal to the monitor. I put the old one back in and tried to reboot but
the problem persisted, no picture. I have an aftermarket nVidia GeForce 4-
Mx 440 PGP 8x video card in this computer. I am able to boot in safe mode
to access the BIOS. Any suggestions? Thanks.

You have 2 computers then? ... or when you say there's no signal to the
monitor do you mean when you let windows bootup normally you get no display?
..... if you're able to get into the bios and safe mode (you can't access the
bios from windows safe mode btw) then it sounds like a software issue rather
than a problem with the cd-rw

Only one computer. There is no signal to the monitor when windows boots
normally. The problem is something changed when I put cd-rw in and even
after removing it and replacing the old one I cant boot normally.

sounds like when you've replaced the cdrom with the writer windows has
loaded extra files/drivers to be able to use it and they've been corrupted
somehow or aren't compatible with whatever version of windows you're using.
Check the compatibilty list for the version of windows you're using and
maybe the HP website to see if there are any updated drivers etc.

if you're using xp have you tried the system restore option to roll-back to
before you installed the writer?

Well, it's too late but I swore off HP products long ago. It seems like
just about every experience I've ever had with any of their products, from
CD drives to printers, has ended up creating a driver hell.

If you need to email, then chainbreaker (naturally) at comcast dot
net--that's "net" not "com"--should do it.

Its Windows 2000. I replaced the nVidia driver and things are working
again, you were right, the video driver was overwritten. I will look at the
HP website, thanks.
