Hello

Came home from work yesterday to find my desktop was corrupt so i re boots
the machine and i find i got all horizontal lines down the screen i try the
graphics card in another machine and it has the same problem :( The card is
a Gainward Geforce 4 ti4600 750/gxp golden sample which i have had clocked
at 320/700 for over a year with no probs i don't think overclocking has
caused this cause its got major cooling components like ram sinks etc... on
it. Looks like now i got to go out and purchase a new graphics card so i
thought i would seek some advice. What would be a good upgrade to a ti4600
with best price/performance ratio i don't have mega amounts of money to
spend so like the high end cards are a no no i was thinking of the FX5700
ultra.

Anyone give me some advice? TIA :)

Since you need it right away, I would say get one of the 5900 cards; the
5900, 5900SE or 5900XT. The 5900 is a little faster (400/800) but the 5900SE
and 5900XT are just about the same: SE 400/700, XT 390/700.

As you live in the UK you will find the 9800pro for around £140 all in (if
you collect). I paid around £137 and they must be one of the best buys, in
terms of performance for the cost.
I considered what NVidia had to offer and there was nothing in the same
league for a similar price.
It might be a little more expensive than the 5700 Ultra that you are
suggesting but it would be a "faster" card.
It was my first ATI card for a little while and whilst I was apprehensive I
installed it along with the 4.4 Cats and it just worked with the performance
as you would expect.
A pity that your card fried as it was a very good one, my Son now has my
Gainward Ti4200 Golden Sample.

You can get an MSI 5900XT for around £130 at Komplett. That was the cheapest
price I could find.

Unless you have a preference for either ATI or NVidia which would offer the
best performance for the cost though....

A MSI 5900XT or ATI9800pro.

For me it was the 9800pro that offered the most. That is why I suggested
that the card that NVidia has got that does rival the 9800pro (with both the
ATI and NVidia card not overclocked) costs a lot more.

Someone posted in here that Dabs had a stock of Leadtek 5900XT's in at
around a similar price with the capability, so the post read, to overclock
really well. But I remember reading about the Hercules 9800 AIW and how that
has around a 50% chance to softmod to a pro. Knowing my luck I would be in
the wrong 50%.

Still, like I would have done before buying this 9800pro, there are some
people that prefer NVidia for reasons other than performance.
