Now this is a tough one, how many good female singers are there, Im not talking about the pre packaged crap like Britney Spears, Im talking about Women singers who write and perform thier own stuff, singers like Suzanne Vega, Joan Armatrading, Joni Mitchell,Sinead OConnor, I have named 4 of the great female singers, and they are the 4 best I can think of (Along with PJ Harvey) so who can you guys come up with ?

Best female singer?
I would have to say either Dionne Warwick , Chaka Khan or
Aretha Franklin!

Best looking one?
There´s only one choice, and that is Sandra! (From the 80's , "Maria Madalena", and from the group "ENIGMA" )

I'd say Aretha Franklin or Pre cocaine Whitney Houston.

At the risk of sounding less than straight- best singer i dunno, but the ones I like the best are Tori Amos (very unique voice anyway) and Sarah McLachlan.

Does Maralyn Manson count?

I would have to agree that the Queen of Soul would be up there, Aretha has such a powerful voice, and she is great, I guess for staying power you would include Madonna, but she deserved to be shot for murdering American Pie, she had no taste on that one,

What have you got against Mariah Carey?

Madonna is more of a business woman than a singer. She is just a pop singer, although she is no longer a puppet to the record label. Still she just releases songs that are already popular at the time.

Aretha franklin is good.

Did you watch this programme on MTV a few weeks ago called Divas. I think they covered the Divas Concert, I missed most of it.

I only like "The World is not enough" and "Paranoid" from garbage. I heard a remix of "milk". It sounded pretty OK. (I'm not exactly sure if "milk" is a garbage song.)

Only that music?

I would say Madonna murdered everything that sounds like music!!

Deserving of mention: Natalie Merchant. Incredibly unique voice and beautiful lyricist both with 10,000 Maniacs and as a solo artist.

Lauren Hill is pretty good.

Mariah Carey is a pop diva who warbles out other peoples songs, so is that mexican chick who sang lets get laid(Loud?)Suzanne Vega has more cred than Carey ever will, thats not to say she dosent make sh1tloads of money, she does, but that has more to do with marketing than talent, Look at the Spice Girls, music these days is more about marketing than talent, and when someone like Billy Corgan who some of you put up with the best bands of all time, stops making music because he says he cant compete with the pre packaged crap going around, then something is very wrong indeed

Wow. I'm not sure on the denotation on that one, but I've a good idea.

There are entirely too many boys/men in this thread that are sexually deprived. Not depraved, mind you, but deprived. I'm not sure if it's a failing of 10,000 years of evolution, or too many educated women in the world.....

And your point is?

I have to vote for education/liberation of women. After all, it's now socially acceptable for them to avoid men all together and just stick with each other. Heh heh. So many men who no longer will know the joy of when a woman 'settles'.

It's almost sad enough to make you cry.

Stevie Nicks and Alanis Morissette both get my vote.

I'll agree with Mariah being a wonderful singer - she has a great sense of pitch in the altissimo range too.

Aside from that, I'll go with Billie Holiday and Diana Krall.
