Help with Nvidia driver XP "The parameter is incorrect"

I replaced my Radeon 7200 with an FX5200 (what a mistake!) and had
problems with the cursor freezing whenever the system was busy.
I re-installed the ATI, then tried the FX again on the weekend when I
had time to play around with settings. On this second attempt, I got
the same error when trying to re-install the drivers.
Log & short of it: nVidia card goes back to store....
