I'm going to be buying a new computer from a custom build place, and I was
just wondering what anyone's suggestions are for a graphics card. I don't
want to break the bank with this system, but I want decent performance out
of it. What would you suggest?

5700 Ultra is a decent performer and reasonable pricewise if you want to go
Nvidia. 9600XT is in the same league performance/pricewise from ATI.

But whatever you do, don't go ATI. Seriously. I guess though that NVIDIA
does need someone around so that are not called a monopoly. LOL.

Au contraire, whatever you do, don't go nvidia. Seriously. I guess though
that ATI does need someone around so that they are not called a monopoly.
LOL.

See how pointless empty advocacy is?

The truth is that both make decent products, neither is perfect, if you had
a specific application in mind then google is your friend--find out if
others are having trouble with that particular application with a
particular brand or model of video board and if so then that's not the one
for you.

Seriously! ATI cards contain trace amounts of Satanic residue and will
corrupt your soul as well as your Windows installation! It's a
well-known fact that nVidia card are manufactured from pure Angelic
essense and are guaranteed to bless and purify your machine, making it
totally unhackable and virus proof! Plus *all* your parity bits will
live in eternal bliss in the great RAM Bank in the sky. Seriously!

Dude, WTF? There are some valid reasons for choosing one company over
another, but when you are talking about the #1 and #2 top companies in a
field, you have to seriously consider each on it's own merits.

I personally prefer Chevy over Ford, but I'll not post "OMG! Don't you
*DARE* buy a Ford! Whatever your do, don't.. you.. DARE!" because there
is no valid reason for this kind of blind support. If you have an
issue, back it up with content, not just baseless ramblings.

Just my 2c here on a dead horse that's been beaten into oblivion many times
over :p
I've been an nvidia fan for a fairly long time- since the days of the TNT2
cards, after being disappointed with the rage pro ati cards at the time.
Recently, I couldn't ignore the fact that the latest radeons were getting
very good benchmark results and were a good bit cheaper than the geforce of
the same price, so I thought I'd give it a shot and grabbed myself a radeon
9800 pro.
I've been disgusted with the "support" from Ati, I have a legitimate problem
with the card under certain circumstances and they fail to acknowledge it's
even an issue. I've become sick of it, returned the radeon and have a
geforce 6800 on order. Neither manufacturer is perfect but from my (limited)
experience, Nvidia seems to have the least glitchy problems, whereas there
seem to be tons of bugs with games listed in each release of the ati
drivers.

It's a shame because the radeon card was fast, but I'd personally take a
small performance hit for the sake of it all working properly.

For under $180, the 5900xt will smoke any 5700.
