I have been trying to install my HP Photosmart P1000 printer to my new
Gateway 7200xl since Christmas Day with no luck.
I went to the HP website and downloaded the driver and printer
software for Windows XP. (I am running windows xp Pro). I have
followed their (HP) instructions precisly with no results. I
installed the software/driver first, conected the printer to power and
then to the computer. A window automatically comes up that says ,
"New Hardware found ......HP Photosmart P1000. It then asks if I want
the system to look automatically for the drivers or manually. I have
tried both. All that happens is the search for these drivers goes on
and on and on. It is never ending. For some reason, it will not pick
up the drivers that I downloaded from the Internet.

Buford, I have found that to get certain software to install (in this case,
MS Works Suite 2003) I had to uninstall Norton Anti-Virus.

Connect the printer and cancel out of the Hardware Wizard. In the
Printers Control panel, remove the printer if it is there. From the
File menu in this control panel, select Server Properties and remove any
references to the printer there. Disconnect the printer and reboot.
Now use the Add New Printer Wizard and select your printer from the list
of printers. You might find two entries for the printer driver: one
early in the list that is the native XP driver for your printer; and at
the end of the list, the HP driver that you installed. You can try the
latter, but usually the XP native printer driver, if it is installed, is
the better choice.
