I use a router and ethernet dsl modem. Those things I think are ok. So is my DSL connection.

Problem started when I installed a Broadxent PCI Faxmodem in my WIN98SE system for backup in case DSL fails.

My download speeds used to be about 900kbps.

I installed the modem, had many problems, and removed it and uninstalled the software through add/remove in control panel.

Now, my download speeds are about 555 kbps, a significant drop.

The indicator to me that there is a problem in my software/system is the Zonealarm indicators, a red/green bar set that indicates traffic. It's pattern is now completely different than pre modem use. I use DSL Reports tests. I had to use DRTCP to restore some settings. I have restored my registry to pre pci modem values using scanreg /restore.

I really don't know what to tweak or look for. The installation of that modem changed something in my system, and what it did is beyond me.

Any suggestions?

run the Tweak test at dslreports and use DrTcp to set your rwins and mtu's for the nic card in your system to whAt is recommended reboot to finish the change

Perhaps an un-installation/re-installation of TCP/IP for the NIC may be in order. Definitely check the DSLreports tweaks, and maybe run a few different speed testers. Also try the speed tests at times where you know the net may be quieter. Many users could be the cause, or bad weather or many users of the speed test...
