I have read that the 6800gt and Ultra can run from a power supply less than
480 watts. As long as they can supply 20Amps. Is this true?
If so, I should be able to run a 6800GT with my 430W Antec True PSU. I'm
not running much else other than an Audigy and a 3Ghz P4.

And several case fans, multiple drives, and optical drives.....right?

If nothing else. Then...
You should be ok with the 480W.

Right. Except, the one optical drive I have won't be spinning when I'm
gaming and I have only one hard drive. I don't consider that to be much
else.
Do you have any insight on this?

The PS requirement for the GT is only a 350Watter. That said, I have an
Antec 430W and about a dozen things hooked up to it with the GT. Runs fine.

People are running GT's in Shuttles with 250w PSU's with no probs at all.

.... on +12V........... if you have a power-hungry processor
( c.f Prescott 3.4 or 3.6 ). Otherwise 18Amps@12V is OK.
15 amps@12V <<may>> be too thin, especially if overclocking
of either GPU or CPU or both is contemplated.

Thanks, John. I have a friend at work that will also find this useful.

Same here on a test system (5900 + shuttle with 220watt) - but those
Shuttles have HQ PSU which makes a difference.

Of course the thing to REMEMBER is that the "Watts" on the package
doesn't mean the true MAX LOAD power.
Hence, a GOOD ($50) 350 watt is better than a junky "500" watt PSU
that costs $30.
An Antec "standard" 350watt has a max load of 230watts. (my old PSU)
I just moved my guts to a new ALU. Case (Antec LanBoy - with cheap
clear window) and stuck in an Enermax 320watt PSU (220watt max) which
was enough of a loss to effect the ability to boot my PC. (I
unplugged HD #2 to get into Windows) While the 350watt Antec could
handle the same setup with 3 HDs (I would use to xfer data/format an
HD)
(AMD 3000+ / ATI 9800Pro / 1GB RAM / 2x 160HDs)
I just about to install the replacement "450watt" (Its a 450~460 on
the box) enermax that has a MAX load of 260watts. I paid an extra $30
for that PSU... But it IS SILENT!!
While I was at the store, I saw some FANCY (plast see thru / lighted)
500watt PSUs for $60~80 - but the plastic means more possible timing
errors to the computer.. but these had a max load of 220watts!
Of course many of the under $50 PSUs are true junk... some
"500watters" that are under 200 true watts.
Hence, its about $100 for an Antec TRUE 400 watt model.
Hopefully, the 6800 series will get improved fans when I am ready for
my next upgrade or ATI somehow gets their OpenGL in order so I can
play on a quiet computer.
