Hey gents, this is the kind of post we thrive on, right?
My apologies to those that also read the ati newsgroup for having to listen
to my woes again :-)
OK, my 9800Pro died. I'll try to rma it, but it will probably take 8 weeks
to see a new card from them, if ever. If I get one, it'll go into my kids'
computer.
First, I'm not brand loyal. Between home and work, I have 2 ATI's and 1
nVidia. I'm now looking at a new card and probably one of these 3. Another
9800Pro, but this time probably msi instead of sapphire, just for kicks.
It'll cost about $200 and would get me through doom3, but not at great
quality. Other than the fact that my 9800 is now dead, I liked it. It just
doesn't seem right to buy a new card with last year's technology at this
point. My wife likes the price, though :-)
Next choices would be a 6800 or 6800GT. I don't know which brands but would
like it as quiet as possible and it'll probably come from newegg.
The 6800 seems like a good deal at around $285 and in most games would give
me some increase in speed over my old 9800Pro.
The 6800GT is a little pricey at over $400 and would be a hard sell to my
wife (I don't care for the price either). The extra pipelines and speed with
AA and AF, along with the 256mb of memory might make it a better choice when
I look back on this next year.
So, how much more gameplay could I expect out of the GT?

It's hard to know where I should draw the line.

My computer should handle any of the new cards. P4 at 3200, 512mb OCz mem at
2.5-2-2-6
9800Pro scores:
3dm03 over 6800
3dm01 over 21400

Any ideas?

>Any ideas?

I just upgraded to a 6800 Standard (from a 9500 Pro) and I am pretty happy
with it. I still have a 2.4G P4 and only 512MB of scram and it seemed like
a perfect match. I wanted to get a GT, but I think the extra $100 is better
spent to upgrade to a 3 GhZ processor and anyway, I have a plan!! eVGA is
the brand I bought and I did it for two reasons. 1st: They bundle Far Cry
with it, I was going to end up buying this game anyway and the way I look
at it the card only cost me $260 that way. 2nd: They have a 90 day upgrade
policy that gives you full boat credit on an upgrade, so I figure in 90 days
I may get a GT or even an Ultra. Also, the heat sink fan do-da covers the
ram and looks to be the same one they put on the GT, when most of the other
Standards I've seen only cover the GPU. I hope I helped a bit. I used to
play alot of driving games and used the ACT LABS wheel setup settings off
your site many times, thanks for the info you share!

Joe, how do you go about trading up? Is it something you can do through
someone like newegg, or do you have to go through evga and pay whatever they
say the GT is worth?

It looks like they just go retail for retail, so it looks like I'd go $100
for the GT or $200 for the Ultra. Check out their site. www.evga.com You
are without a card in the shipping it to them first, but it seems well worth
it!

Even the basic 6800 is a pretty good deal when playing "Doom 3". I'd
personally base my purchase into what kind of monitor I have at home.
If it's 17 inch tube, I'd be happy with just 6800. If it's 19 inch,
I'd get the 6800 GT. These cards can function at larger resolutions
in games than our last generation models. From all the manufacturers
out there, I recommend MSI, Gainward (Golden Sample) and Albatron.

I was on the site, Joe, but I couldn't find anything about it except
something discontinued with Tiger Direct.
Where should I look?

I have a Viewsonic 21" monitor.
I've read a lot of good reviews on the evga brand. What do you think about
that one? It comes with Far Cry which I haven't bought yet, so it's like
getting another 40 bucks off the price. Just a thought.

I run a lot of games at 1600x1200. Things like Call of Duty I run at
1280x1024 with 4xAA and 8xAF, most game graphics up and was getting about
90fps with the 9800Pro in my time demos. I should have ordered something
yesterday because a lot more places are out of them today.
