What makes a person an alcoholic?

There's a bunch of signs. First of all they'll do something stupid that is outside of their behavior over alcohol. If they have to drink at all times to get drunk you know there is something wrong. If they're a completely different person while drunk, and not a good person, it's probably time for them to quit.

if they drink for no reason, like they drink for the sake of drinking!!!!!!

e.g. i drink on my B'day, on friday nights and on saturday nights i am not an alcoholic

if i drink on thursday while watching the sports alone on my couch i am an alcoholic (if its regular)

p.s. i am not an alcoholic coz i don't drink at all

I drink a fair amount.

Mainly wine (red). Sometimes beer.

I've been known to go through a bottle of wine a night for a couple of weeks on end. Wine doesn't have quite the same effect on me anymore and to get really drunk I need 2 bottles. Beer still wastes me good and proper after not drinking much of it though! So my high tolerance is for wine - not alcohol in general. This may seem illogical. It does to me. But that's how it is.

At the moment that I am writing this, I haven't had a drink for over 2 weeks and I haven't craved it during that time.

However I have a bottle of wine in the fridge for tonight and I'm looking forward to it.

Sometimes I drink alone, usually while playing video games when the wife is out or doing something else.

I don't think I have a problem.

Do you?

Drinking alone doesn't necessarily mean you are an alcoholic. I got drunk alone on the 4th of July because I was depressed during the day because the whole family split up and went their seperate ways.

Drinking for the sake of drinking is also done by people before they can legally drink, and then up through like the 22 or 23 birthday, when drinking is still cool. Drinking on the couch while watching sports is perfectly acceptable (to me). However, it also depends on how much you drink. If I have 2-3 beers every night during the Cub's game, that isn't a big deal. If I am drinking a 12 pack every night, that is more of an issue.

Part of alcoholism comes from the parents. If one of your parents was an alcoholic, you have a really good chance of becoming one. As for signs, to me, if alcohol regularly affects someone's performance in the "real world" (like showing up to work hung over or still drunk 3-4 times a week, every week, or getting wasted every night by themselves, then there might be a problem.

IMO it is just sad when someone get drunk just because he is depressed or has enough.

It's just stupid. If people can't face life or accept facts, but have to escape reality, I say it is cowardly, big time. IMO.

Rather than on a regular Friday in a bar? What's the difference? At least in your home the drink is cheaper.

Here's an example. I used to drink a lot when I was in my early 20s. Thursday, Friday, Sturday & Sunday nights for about six months. Not cos I had too, or felt I had to, but because all my pals did, and it was great fun to spend 4 nights out of 7 partying.

Met a girl who lived out of town, and overnight I stopped drinking cos I had to drive to see her. So...regular drinking doesn't make you an alcoholic. Your body 'wanting' the drink when your consious mind has no intention of drinking is the best way I can put it.

LOL, you reminded me of LHG when he put in his sig what Scamtron supposedly implied!

I don't drink, I just take sips on occasions. I don't feel the need to drink right now, (Svol started at 19 and got drunk a few months later ROFL) and am pretty sure I am not the drinker person, but more of a "Pepsi-Sprite" freak.

Wine eh?
Let's see if some Cabernet Sauvignon works tonight, lol!

Well, the way you phrased it, that wasn't quite what happened. I went out to run an errand and screwed up and wasted an hour and a half and came home empty handed. My choices then were to do some housework, watch some TV, play on the computer, or go sit in my pool and have a few drinks and listen to the Cubs game. A drink became a double Captain Morgan & Diet Pepsi, a few became three doubles, and 3 hours in the pool in the sun became some nasty <font color=red>sunburn</font color=red>. So it wasn't like I was doing it because I was depressed and wanted to escape. I had had a bad morning and that was the most appealing choice of how to spend my afternoon alone... Cubs won too, I think... I don't remember. But I got fried, then went out that night and was quite uncomfortable for the next few days... <font color=red>=o(</font color=red>

Grub I've had this conversation with many in the past here and too often I was looked at this way. I think it's just not logical.
First, to what are you saying this to?

The get-drunk-when-life-sucks statement by me or which?

If it's the former man, you have no point. Hurting yourself because life isn't working on said day is not about not taking yourself seriously, nor does it even have to do with that.

Again I'd appreciate if you could explain what are you replying to.

Sorry, Eden. I wasn't trying to put you down. I wasw trying to give you some advice. You probably don't know me well enough for me to do that, so I apologize.

To clarify, I wasn't saying that you should get drunk everytime you have a problem that you don't feel like dealing with. I was trying to say that your reasoning behind why you shouldn't is presumptive and a bit judgmental. They're no more a coward for doing this than you and I are cowards for the faults we have. I'm not saying its OK, I'm just saying that a little understanding goes a long way. Try to see beyond the person's action to their motivation...there is where you will connect with people...not with logic

Grub, I'm just about one of the most open-minded people here, and I give you my word on it in fact.

Drinking yourself till your senses come off, because you don't wanna deal with life's problems (think of the bar drunkards who come in and ask contiuously), is as bad as just suiciding to escape. Both seek ways to obliterate the bad feeling.

I know I have many times judged something and many have even seen the progress I displayed in opening my mind. However, things that destroy you physically or even mentally, I will not support. Supporting pot legalization became more ok to me as long as there were areas assigned to it as we already have to deal with the smoke coming from cigarette smokers. Supporting cigarette to continue, I'll never accept. It's bad, it has to go, period. I ain't opening my mind to no cigarette compromise.
Same as I ain't going over chapters on drinking yourself away to escape reality like that.

Now, a different question. Why do you not pester Scamtron on drinking?
Why me? If my personal beliefs tell me I don't want to get drunk, but don't mind drinking alcohol with moderation, then why would YOUR VIEW be more rightful, which in your mind seems to be that "you're taking yourself too seriously if you don't try it out here and there". Not saying you're saying I should do it all the time. I know what you're trying to tell me, I just don't see why your view and many others here who share it, should be the one we should follow as model. I'm much less strict than Scam on principles, so why am I target of this?

If we DO have to go back to the old conversations we had with me about "having fun while you still can", then, well, there's gonna be repetition, and rather one that involves each's personal views and which may conflict with judgement as well.
