I bought my Leadtek FX5900XT mainly for UT2004. I was very tempted to
upgrade to a Geforce 6800 for Doom 3. But I decided to wait and see how
the game actually played before I did anything.
On my P4 2.4C, 1GB dual-channel DDR400, and FX5900XT Doom 3 looks and
runs great. To keep frame rates up I run at 800x600, medium quality, and
2XAA. The game looks very good and I haven't experienced even a hint of
slowdown during game play. Would I like to play at higher resolutions
and quality settings? Of course! But would the actual Doom 3 game play
experience be any better? Not really.
From the initial benchmarks I've seen on the Source engine it looks like
HL2 will also perform decently on this card. Even though it may be
forced to the DX8.1 code path.
I may still buy a 6800. But it's nice to know that even if I don't my
current FX5900XT should carry me through this year.
