Just wondering if its necessary to have the nvidia display setting software
running in the task bar. Does this even need to be installed?

No it's not necessary, you can access all the features through the 'normal'
control panel. To disable it you go into the control panel, go to Desktop
Management, and click on disable.
Don't think you can choose not to install it though, it is part of the
driver.

I don't have a troubleshooting tab. There are only two tabs available to
choose from -- the others are greyed out. I have desktop management and
profile.
