@ 1280x1024, how high-end of card do I need?

Using a SyncMaster 192N, 19" flat panel LCD monitor, I am limited to
1280x1024. Taking that into consideration, how high-end of video card would
I really need, to get the best out of the new 3D games? It seems like a lot
of their capacity is to support the game at very high resolutions. Would I
not be able to take full advantage of the new GPU's, due to my monitor, or
would I just achieve higher FPS?

Thanks,
Bill Crocker

If you want "playable" fps in most new games, buy as much card as you can
afford especially to run at 12x10. I speicifically used quotes as playable
has different meanings for different people.

This partly depends on your CPU and whether or not you want the best
graphics experience you can have (high quality settings, FSAA & AF). Higher
FPS isn't small priority.

To play doom 3 and games that will come out soon you will need a fairly
high-end graphics card to be able to have playable frame rates at 1280x1024.

The nvidia 6600GT is out soon for $200.

I just bought a new 19 inch CRT, Samtron 98PDF with flat screen, and
my eyes got healed. It's like a brand new world after stirring eyes
over an old 17 inch tube. The question I have for you is that what
kind of graphics card you have installed right now? If lesser than
5900XT, I'd recommend the basic 6800. However, I've heard reports
that the new GeForce 6 line of cards aren't as great with VGA
connectors as the previous generation, but if you have DVI, you
shouldn't have too many worries. But on the top of my hat, I'd say
6800.
