ok my brother considers himself a bit of a computer geek

he's 3 years older than me and has had the same computer for about 5 years (1 upgrade)

well he got a job on the road and gave it to me!!

i have a 2.4 Ghz computer with 1Gb of ram

the one he gave me is 700Mhz, and 196Mb ram


so i'll use it as a server or for added rendering power (coz i do 3d graphics rendering)



well anyway he said it was having random reboots etc... and was freezing up all the time before he gave it to me.

i opened it up to stick in a HDD (4gb only LOL yeah thats all it gets)

well i notice there are NO CASE FANS

there is no ventilation at all.

also the CPU heat sink hasn't been cleaned out in 5 years meaning it was clogged as hell

he told me he thought it might be over heating DAMN RIGHT IT WAS.

geeze man what a complete idiot


well anyway i have cleaned it out and hopefully it will work alright now.

i will load mandrake 9.1 onto it (the minimal install without many programs on it)

well anyway i guess its a pet project to shove it in his face.

he reckoned it was running about as fast as a 300Mhz, and i'm gonna get it to a decent quality speed.

if it is over heating i may underclock it a bit. i mean i don't need much power to connect to the net through or act as a server.

Hmmm what way does the fan on the heat sink blow?

towards the cpu or away from it

oh well i'll just make it blow away from the cpu

(i know nothing about computers, and confess to be inexperienced as hell in these matters)

IF the case that your brother gave you had no ventilation whatsoeover, then there is no way that even 60 ultrra case fans are going to be of any benefit to cooling (assuming you hasve a hefty power supply). Perhaps when your bro shopped for the case, he did not know as much aout computers as he does now. I wouldn't call my bro an idiot for that. Afterall, he was kind enough to give you his system, and I would feel ashamed if I talked about one of my relatives like that after such a kind deed. But this is beside the point. Underclocking won't help much either because heat will still accumilate inside the case, just not as rapidly. If you are a cheapskate like me, I would suggest taking the left side of the case off and you will have better cooling than you could possibly imagine. Leave the HSF solution on, because theast must disspate from the CPU core ASAP.

Now if you can afford high end products like LHGPoobaa or Eden, I would suggest a new case with plenty of fans. And after I make certain that the case has proper ventilation and cooling, then I would change HSF cooling solution, apply thermal past, and PUrchase a Volcano cooler or something along with a high quality heastsink.

a 700 mhz system doesnt even need a case fan. i have a system for watching videos on my tv, its an xp 1700. i didnt even have a case fan until summer and i added a radeon 9100.

But if his case has no ventilation, he should just remove the left panel, or risk overheating his CPU.

i'm leaving the side off on this one.

i think the buildup of crap on the heatsink probably made it worse.

yeah wipe all that sh|t off and put some arctic thermal on ther that should take care of the problem.

i have no thermal grease

i'm just gonna leave the side off

i just cleaned out the stuff inbetween the fins (while the heatsink was still in the case)

its sweet now, it runs mandrake 9.1 pretty damn well, installed more easilly than my computer LOL
