Hi there. Im really having problems with my computer. Im assuming its the
graphics card thats causing the problem.

My comp spec is:
Graphics Card
Leadtek Winfast GeForce4 Ti4200 64MB DDR AGP A250LE

Motherboard
Gigabyte Ga8ge667 Skt478 I845ge ATX VGA Sound FSB533 ATA100

Processor
Intel Pentium 4 2.4 GHz PC533 Socket PGA478, 512KB cache

Memory
DDR-DIMM PC2700 512MB DDR CL2.5 Generic memory 184-P (for DDR-PC333MHz)

Monitor
Relisys TE988 19"

OS
XP

The problem im having is when i try and run games. For instance, Terminator.
I load it up, configure the controls and then it loads all maps etc. Then i
press a key to continue then it dies.

What i mean by this is, The screen will go black, the led will turn orange
and i cant do anything. But the game is still running in the background as i
can hear it etc.I have to then restart the PC.

Ive tried updating the graphics card drivers, and motherboard drivers, and
monitor drivers. Ive ran all windows updates etc but still get the same
problem. At the moment the refresh rate is 60 at the moment. Ive tried
swapping the monitor with a different one, but get exactly the same problem.

It does this with a few games, but the odd ones will work, such as Sims.

The fan on the card is working, aswell as the fan on the CPU.

Has anyone got any ideas?Sorry for the long post, but ive just got no idea
what i can do..

Cheers

I have a feeling your 3D part of your card may have problem.
First, what driver you have install for your LeadTek from your Display
Properties?
Does it indicate something like this - "Leadtek Winfast GeForce4 Ti4200 64MB
DDR AGP A250LE" or Nvidia GeForce4 Ti4200 or similar?

You might have a bad card. Try to uninstall and reinstall by going to
safemode and to Add/Remove Program.
Download the latest driver from nvidia site first -
http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp
Restart Windows. Windows detect new hardware and want to install. Cancel.
Find nvidia driver you download. Execute and start the installation. Try
your game again and see it blank out.

Try to use default refresh rate and I have the feeling that your
monitor have some fault.

I had it on the default refresh rate and it did the same, and i thought
about monitor problems, but ive tried another monitor, which does exactly
the same :S

The only easy method I know how is to get another good PSU and see. Make
sure you know the return policy of that vendor. Or you can keep as a backup.

ive tried drivers etc again.

Then ive taken the case off, put a big room fan pointing in over the CPU and
graphics card(its too big of a fan to isolate just one area) and ive been
able to play my game virtually fine...

Any ideas?

You pointed a big fan at it and the games now work? You've got a heat
problem. 1st try underclocking your card, or not overclocking it, and
if all works then your card is fried. Also, try memory and/or cpu
intensive benchmarks/progs (no big graphics) to see if thats the prob.
In games, the CPU and dram get a good workout as well.

Try a can of PC spray coolant (computer stores or electonic stores) to
chill particular areas.

Used to have a heat problem with a KX133 mobo. games locked up but
everything else was fine. Turned out to be a small IC next to the
memory that got too hot. Drove me nuts for months - replaced mem, cpu,
video with no joy until I noticed that chip got excruciatingly hot at
PC133 but not PC100 SDRAM settings. Design flaw.
