At least my Ipaq h5550 has the physical SIM card slot, but it's covered by a
seal that says: "Warranty void if broken."

As far as I've understood, this Ipaq comes from the same factory line as
PPC Phone Edition devices by HTC that are sold under Qtek label.

This also means that it's not a big steap for HP to jump from PPC business
to PPCPE business (the rumoured Ipaq h6xxx series).

But what was the purpose of adding this? I am surprised there has not bee a
mod to use this slot. HP is most unlikely to add an update to the 5000
series at this point.

There was to be iPAQ 5600 with built in GSM/GPRS or CDMA modules and some
aditional wireless module like BT or WLAN. It was to have the same form
factor as 54xx and 55xx iPAQs. That is why HP did include the sim card slot
in this PDAs in order to have a construction ready for a new model. But then
they said that the market is too small for such devices, and iPAQ 56xx never
make it to the pubic... well... this is not quite right, because some of the
prototypes landed on eBay.

There's no GSM/GPRS hardware inside the iPAQ
to utilize the SIM slot, and the slot itself
isn't even wired. tear off the sticker and
you'll find there are no copper springs, and
you tossed your warranty out the window.
It's only the iPAQ's casing that has the SIM
slot shape in it under the battery, nothing
more. there will never be a mod or update
to make use of this dent in the inside of
the iPAQ's casing.
It was HP's design concept that was never
utilized, and they simply didn't change the
case mold to exclude the SIM slot space.

It is strange that the previus version of the 5550 (the 5450) has Nevo and
the simreader. In a certain way has more options... If I had known before
buying the 5550...

The lack of Consumer IR and Nevo was documented when the 5550 was
released. I think the 5550 was -even more than the 5450- targeted at
the enterprise market, and HP decided they don't need Consumer IR or
Nevo. I agree with you though, that it would have been cool if it
would have been added.

The SIMreader of the 5450 was not something anyone could use, so
there's not a lot missed there.
