easiest thing would be to get yourself a wireless router like the <A HREF="http://www.dlink.com/products/digitalHome/wireless/11b+/di614+/" target="_new">DLink DI-614+</A> which <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=335&manufactory=1015&DEPA=5&sortby=14&order=1" target="_new">newegg</A> has for $112 and a <A HREF="http://www.dlink.com/products/wireless/dwl520/" target="_new">DLink DWL-520</A> which <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=31&manufactory=1015&DEPA=5&sortby=14&order=1" target="_new">newegg</A> has for $59 with a $20 rebate. Hopefully the downstairs PC has a NIC already.

Hi Jlanka,

None of them have NIC. Right now, I have just regular ISP and will change to cable or DSL that depends on which one's better. Is it slower than wire if using the wireless for network connection?
Thanks

then you just have to get a regular NIC for the downstairs PC, I already showed you a wireless NIC for upstairs. Wireless is slower (11Mbps) than typical physical (100Mbps) but it doesn't matter when you're on the web because the fastest you'll get there will be 1 -2 Mbps, plenty fast for wireless.

Cable modem has the potential to be faster, but it's a shared line which means that the more users there are in your area, the slower it will get. DSL is more consistant. Speed will vary widely between service providers. Check out your local cable and DSL providers and start by getting the minimum guaranteed speed ratings.

I use a Linksys DSL / Cable router. It comes with 4 or 8 ports (you only need two, so get the 4-port model). It has a built-in firewall that's very easy to configure and costs under $100. You would then need two network cards. THis will give you 100mbps speed instead of 11 from wireless, but this only matters if you plan to transfer data from one computer to another and want the fastest speed possible. <A HREF="http://www.linksys.com/Products/product.asp?grid=23&prid=20" target="_new">Here's a link to the 4-port router</A>.

Linksys sells a wide range of wireless network accessories, and if you have the money to spend, they offer a dual-band wireless router claiming up to 72mbps. I don't know much about it but it sells for around $285. <A HREF="http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=22&prid=452" target="_new">Check it out here</A>.

Hi Jlanka,

Now, I'm planning to have 4pcs to share the dsl, printer, data, files, etc, in 2weeks, 3 upstairs (those will be in 2 differrent rooms), and 1 downstairs.
If you don't mind please tell me what are the components that I should buy in order to make them work?
Your help is fully appreciated!
