FarCry even slower after upgrade

Hi,

Im a died hard farcry fan so I decided to upgrade my machine.
I bought a new 3.2Ghz 478 pin prescott P4, Gigabyte board and BFG 6800
video card (upgraded from a P4 2.4c, Asus board and Leadtek Ti 4400)
Ram stays the same at 512MB

Much to my dismay, I find that things seem slower. When the action heats
up in farcry, things just about crawl to a slide show. I ran 3dmark03 to
test the system and im getting just over 10000 3dmarks (as compared to
under 2000 with the old system).

Ive upgraded/downgraded drivers but it doesnt seem to get better.
I was expecting smooth gameplay with all the eye candy turned on.

Anyone got any ideas whats going on here ???

A mistake.... Far Cry needs 1 Gbyte.

With all the eye-candy turned on ?

You must be joking. Between the AI demands and the graphical demands,
Far Cry with all eye-candy on will be a challenge for a 5GHz CPU and
dual SLI 6800 Ultra.

The Cryengine scales very well, but unlike most other titles, the Far
Cry designers put little artificial constraints on the upper-end
graphics setting.

i would sya to upgrade ur CPU cooler. i got a gigabyte 3d cooler pro on my
2.8Ghz p4 with the northwood core and at 3000rpm it barly gets hotter than
50C. Also use arctic silver 5 instead of the heatsink pad u get with the
intel cooler. it should shave a few degrees off at least

Double check your hard drive is running in DMA mode and not PIO. Go into
your BIOS and check your AGP aperature size (might need to be increased - or
decreased, for that matter). In the same area of your BIOS, check your fast
writes. If on, turn off - or vice versa.

You probably lack enough cooling, prescotts are very hot CPU's and if it's
overheating it will reduce the mhz.

Im using the standard Intel HSF and the CPU is not overclocked.
Seems to me that Intel should ship an adequate cooling solution with the
chip if its gonna run hot.

The stock cooling is adequate for normal task but will not be efficient when
there demend on the CPU.
This article will explait it -

CapFusion,...

Yes, and the Intel included cooler is not up to the task at all. Prescott is
a waste of money, a good desk-warmer, an even better way of testing the
effects of thermal stresses on your components, and generally a typical
Intel faux-pas. I prefer the Northwood core, but for gaming, nothing
compares to AMD's Winchester core...

Intel's thermal throttling is a NECESSARY FEATURE.

Do AMD cpus have thermal throttling or protection features?

I ask because I'm planning to go AMD with my next gaming machine build.
Something along the lines of the FX53 chip.

i s'pose if u want to save money you could use the prescott cpu to cook you
a fried breakfast. probably more useful that way as well.

I did a little research on the intel website with regards to the prodcut
spec finder and this is what i found out.

I use a 2.8GHz norhwood core P4 cpu. A prescott cored celeron processor at
the SAME speed of 2.8GHz gives off 20Watts MORE heat. and celeron
processors are no match for the geniune pentiums.

just thought id let u know

Yes, the AMD64 series.

No idea, but there is an option for that feature in my bios.

Even though you now know you can solve the problem with better cooling,
going to 1 GB of ram, like John said, will make a huge difference in games
like Far Cry and Doom 3.
