6800 Ultra Power Issue

My 6800 ultra reports a power problem and reduced performance on a soft
boot. Cold boot works fine; card is running at 1100 MHz. I've confirmed that
after a soft boot it's running at 500 MHz after receiving the power warning.
I've tried two different power supplies (430w and 480w) and both report
acceptable readings in the bios. (ASUS P4C800 Deluxe) (Latest bios).

I can't figure out why a soft boot would change the power output. EVGA says
to RMA the card, but I don't think it's the card. Can I safely change the
"AGP VDDQ voltage" in the bios setup without causing problems?

Does anyone know where I can find detailed information about adjusting power
settings in the bios without cooking stuff? I'm thinking that some bios
setting is not being reset on a soft boot?

Far Cry seems crash prone when the card is running at 1100, with the video
totally "fritzing", especially around the water? I've loaded the latest
patch from Far Cry but I'm still having problems. I've played the game
while the card is running at 500mhz for over an hour with no problems.
(actually I can't tell much difference in the game, it still looks great!)

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated
Pentium 4 GHz
Asus p4c800 deluxe
1gb ram
EVGA Nvidia 6800 ultra (256)
2 fans in front, 2 in back
I've never seen the card temp over 60°c

Make sure the aux power from the card is firmly attach.

Yep, I don't really think it is actually a power problem. The second power
supply I bought is an Antec 480 ($140). I have two separate connectors into
separate outputs on the power supply, and I've tried everyone of the outlets
on the power supply. Cold startup works great every time. Soft reboot
triggers the error (every time). I have the latest bios from ASUS what
other bios could I try? My computer guy flashed the bios a couple of weeks
ago when I upgraded the Intel processor from 2.2 to 3~. I'm not that
familiar with bios stuff... I did just install the beta drivers from NVIDIA
and no crash on Far Cry (so far).

Thanks for the help!

Well, hopefully it will not crash.

Strange problem, I advise you make sure the 2 power plugs on the card are
plugged into different cables from the power supply unit.

Maybe it is just a bad card and I should RMA it. I do have two separate
power supplies to the card, and I just can't see how it can be the power
supplies (either of them). All of the temperatures and voltages are within
the ranges specified by EVGA. I've had the card running for days at 1100mhz
with no problems (except for Far Cry). It's only when I "shutdown and
restart" or hit the "reset" that I get the warning message.

I just keep thinking that it something in the power management of the BIOS.
(or get rid of Far Cry). Actually my son has the same card on an Alienware
computer, and hasn't had a problem. I'll see if he's tried the game on his.

Thanks,

The simple say to verify if the card or th MoBo is the issue is to have the
card onto another MoBo to see if the problem follow.
If it does, then it the card otherwise the MoBo might be a problem.

Well sure it could easily be a fault or bug with the motherboard. Consider
trying a different bios version.

It crashed again, actually right after I wrote this message. I messed with
every bios, control panel, and nvidia setting that I could find over the
last month and the card would just not run for more that ten or twenty
minutes without crashing in Far Cry or really any of the other newer games.
I stole an identical 6800 card from my son's computer and it's been running
for about five days right now with NO problems. I called Evga, told them
the story (to add to my long list of tech support comments) and no problem,
got an RMA. Problem solved!
