Is there a card that can outperform my Ti4400 for $100?

I'm on a strict budget here. Is there a card that could get me
DX9 support, and give a little boost over my current Ti4400? I'm
currently running it on an Athlon XP 3000+ with 512MB DDRAM.
From what I've seen, it doesn't look like it, but maybe
someone knows of a good deal.

You might be able to pick up a used FX5700 Ultra on eBay for around that
price. It would meet your requirements. Although some people don't like
eBay it's a good place to pick up used computer components for a lot
less than the cost of new ones.

Looks like that's my only hope, but from what I've seen, it's
impossible to score a vanilla 5700 for $100 much less the Ultra
version.

There is no card under $100 on the market, new, that is faster than your
4400.

Nor will there be for another 2 years by the looks of it.

A 5700LE should run you about $80 and they reportedly overclock easily to
5700Ultra speeds. Not much of a boost, but a little.

I thought the LE's where 64bit memory bus vesions? I wouldn't
think any amount of overclocking would get it near a GF4 Ti card's
performance.

There are 128-bit versions for less than $100, check out Leadtek's card.
An overclocked 5700LE is your only option under $100.

The generic 9600Pro cards are hovering just over $100 (~$115). They are
slightly faster than a Ti4400, depending on the game, and have DX9
support.

I picked up a brand new Visiontek 9600XT on ebay about 6 months ago for
$110.00. It replaced a ti4200. It gave me more performance and DX9
support. I saw somewhere that Nvidia is set to release a AGP version of the
standard 6600. It will sell for about $150. This would be a major upgrade
for you.

And about the 5700LE clocking to Ultra speeds? There is no way in hell to
get the LE's memory up to 1 Ghz. Bottom line, don't buy an FX card.

I'd have to agree, the 5700LE I had would only clock from 250,400 up to
310,520 or so. To get it to the 475,900 speeds of an Ultra seems nearly
impossible. Even overclocked, the 5700LE never ran measurably better than
the Ti4200 it replaced. It now sits in the wife's machine replacing a TnT2
Ultra and I don't really see a lot of difference there either.

Actually if you look at the completed auction listings on eBay there are
several FX5700 Ultras that sold in the $100 price range. Of course, you
may have to follow the currently available auctions for a while to get
the price you want.

That's not an major improvement over a 4200. I can get around 13500 in 3DMark
2001 which is DirectX 8 with my 4200, my nephew can only get around 12000 with
his 9600XT.

Now when we run 3Dmark2003 DirectX9. I can get around 2000, he can get around
3000 I think.

He beats me there, but not by much. Save your money for a 6600GT so you really
notice the improvement.

The 5700U is clocked at 900Mhz, the overclocked 5700LE is clocked at
600Mhz and performance-wise it fell between the 5700 & 5700U. BTW, I
agree with you about not buying an FX card, but like I said, there is
no other option for less than $100. The guy is better off saving his
pennies and buying a 6600.

p.s. There is a fix for Outlook Express that will stop the top posting
problem or you could just get a real newsreader. I highly recommend
Xnews.

A 5700LE is clocked at 250/400. The 5700U is clocked at 475/900 to 1000
depending on manufacturer. As you can see, there is quite a difference
between the two cards. I agree he should save for a 6600 agp.

Thanks. When I started on the internet in 1990 (via Compuserve @ 1200
baud), top posting was common despite what many people will tell you and
to this day I prefer top posting; but I don't do it because 99.9% of posts
are bottom posted and it just messes up the flow.

Are you talking the piss here or is there really a fix for OE and top
posting. I get pissed at scrolling down all the time, especially on a long
thread. I would be interested in more info on this if it is real.

I like OE for news though cause it keeps all my news and email together in
one tidy little bundle.

I never understood why people are so up-tight about the cursor being at the
top of posts when replying. It allows one to scroll down through the remarks
one is replying to and intersperce comments as desired. If one wants to skip
the original post one merely needs to input a <CTRL+END > and the cursor is
magically at the very end of the post.

That said, OE Quote-Fix does add the ability to choose where the cursor will
be positioned plus a number of other features.

ha. I've been running OE quotefix for a while now because of the nice
colours and stuff. I missed the button that lets the cursor start at the
bottom of the post (where it should be)

Good o. All happy now.
