I have a Solo 1450 with 128MB RAM, Celeron 1.3GHZ processor and a 400SD4
with 512MB RAM, P-4 2.0GHZ. One thing I have noticed about the machines is
the 1450 boots 3 times as fast as the SD4...with 1/4 the RAM. The only part
of booting the SD4 is over the 1450 is when it they are first turned on
within a few seconds, the Windows XP boot screen comes on and about 8
seconds later it is on the 1450. But from there, the 1450 just blows the
SD4 away. Oh one more ddifference...the SD4 has XP Home and the 1450 has XP
Pro.
I'm considering selling one of the machines and of course I'd like to keep
the newer "more powerful" SD4, but not if that's just how its going to be.
Does anyone else notice anything like this?

Boot speed is affected by many variables which include the number of
programs which start when the computer starts, fragmented harddrives,
number of peripherals, and twenty other things I haven't mentioned.

I understand. The programs are almost identical as are the peripherals.
Actually the programs don't come into play because the 1450 has gotten to
the Windows desktop screen so far in advance of the SD4 with as I said 1/4
the memory. Now after booting, there is of course noticeable difference in
performance because of that difference.
The SD4 has always been slow booting even when it was brand new out of the
box. My concern is perhaps the memory installed is bad? Maybe a BIOS
setting? Or if someone else has had a similar situation with one and they
know what it is. I really don't want to buy new memory if I don't need to
since it can't be used in the other machine (DDR vs SDRAM). Other than
booting faster, the other advantage the 1450 has it's memory can be upgraded
to 1GB as the SD4 is maxed out at 512MB. Decisions, decisions, decisions!
Thanks,
Michael

Try running msconfig and see just what is different on the two machines.
You may be surprised at the number of programs starting on each.
To do this click start | run and enter msconfig and then click the
appropriate button.
