Volker, here's a paste of the start of a request for help that
appeared in alt.comp.anti-virus this morning:
*************************************
I have recently formatted my hard drive and reinstalled XP.
I allowed Windows to update itself and recieved 24 viruses in the
proccess.
*************************************
I don't use XP so I'm unfamiliar with the use of and enabling its
firewall. Also, I'm not clear on whether or not all versions of XP
come with the firewall ... and with it enabled by default.
What I recommend in general to average home users lacking a
external fw/router .... regardless of their OS ... is to keep a
copy of the install file of their favorite firewall on CD. Then
when when they re-install Windows, they should install the
fw before going online to fetch Window updates.

Common problem.
_Before_ connecting to the Internet, the ICF of Windows XP / Windows XP SP1
has to be activated, or at least www.dingens.org has to be applied.
Then downloading Windows XP SP2 ispossible.
