It's the fastest and generally considered the most reliable service in the NYC (New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania). Prices keep going up though. Was $29.99 when I joined 3 years ago, now it cost me $49.99, ugh. Anyway, up until recently, almost all reviews would be positive. Lately, you see alot of complaints because of people being capped due to excesive upload usuage. It's in our contracts to not run a server, but many folks do, or they get wrapped up and become a fat kazzaa pipe without realizing that they are soon to be capped. It's basically 10 Mbps down and 1 Mbps up service unless you get capped.

Have you ever had 10Mbps? I mean, that's insane!
And yeah it's kinda hard to guess who they are if you're not in the area it serves.
Over here we pay 39.95$ CDN per month via a 12-month contract for 3Mbps down DSL with 800Kbps up. I renew every year the contract or otherwise we shell out 5$ more per month. It's a good service IMO, it only once went down in the near 4 years I've used it, and it doesn't cap bandwidth in any way (since a while they cut that limit to compete) so we can DL like crazy.
I just wish they'd offer to sell the modem already!

No, not really. It's more like 9-9.5Mbps. I've tested at 9.35Mbps on a few speed tests like speakeasy and pcpitstop, and have finished downloads at as much as 1.17MB/s. They may start as high as 1.23MB/s, but never stay above 1.20 MB/s for very long. Only time I see a bit more is in multiple downloads. I've tried it on two machines, as well as multiple downloads on one machine, and it will stay very near the 10Mbps rated speed. It may drop to 1.04 MB/s at a real slow time. The main thing is having a router with a 100Mbps WAN port, as my old Linksys 10Mbps WAN port router knocked speeds down to about 850 KB/s max.
Personally, I like the speed for sure, but I'd give up half of this speed if they'd knock me back down to $30 a month. I'll stay with them for $50, but if it goes up another $10-15, i'd be shopping around for Verizon DSL or something cheaper.

$40 Canadian is cheap for that speed, assuming it's reliable service.
I could get Verizon DSL cheap, but although I hear they are improving, they are still not considered up to par with OOL reliability wise. In 3 years, I had 7 hours of total down time over two outages, one of which was from a storm. Can't complain about that. But things changed last week when a serviceman cut me loose at the telephone pole when he was supposed to be disconnecting a different address. Their error and the service guy who came out to fix it shook his head and apologized like crazy. But it did take them over 24 hours to get here which annoyed me as I had a windows intall and win updates to do that night on someones machine. And since it was a friend who had just moved, and another neighbor saw the OOL truck parked at the pole that morning, I knew what had happened. How dare they make me fall behind here at THGC.

Not again.....and you even feel good about it?
What kind of wifi do they have anyways, couple of blocks?! My wifi connection speeds slows down from 54Mbs to less than 5Mbs just by being two floors lower than my access point in my own home, and you get a decent speed a couple of blocks away? Nice construction works in your neighborhood....or your neighbor should go into the broadcasting industry.

Just because the law hasn't caught up yet doesn't mean it's not illegal. Then there's the moral issue.

I don't think I've yet seen anybody have such access for a home connection yet. I've heard and seen the service, but not quite the testimonials. WOW. I mean, that is a freakin' lot of bandwidth d00d. If I hear you complaining it got below 1 meg, I'll personally make a Flash-based spyware and make you regret the few KBs it'll waste by accessing THG secretly every few nanoseconds!!!

I've read all about your kind. Shame on you. I haven't done it, but it's sure no secret many folks get their kicks out of that. Funny thing is, while my wireless networking is disabled, you could sit out in front of my house at lunch and have your own speedy ool connection as someone within a strong signal range has a nice open wirless connection. That's what you get for plugging in a wirless router without securing it properly. A buddy discovered it at my house when he wanted me to enable wireless access for his laptop. Then he said, no need to bother as somebody nearby was providing a nice strong signal for him. He even joked it was me, so I had to put my cable modem on standbye to quickly prove it and save face.

I guess it's expected, but still amazes me how many just plug in their wireless router and that's it. I guess with your expereinces there, as well as within my place here, free wireless is a pretty common thing. No wonder people drive around and find nice spots to park and surf. All traced back to someone elses IP.
Ever attempt to look for any shared files or printers? Wouldn't it be fun to print a warning messege for them.
Sheesh, the "fun" could be endless, and someone in the house could have some explaining to do.

No, I'm not like that. I posted about this the first time around in the other section and got yelled at, but I accessed their router and set it up so that only their (and my) MAC address could access their wireless network. I then changed the password from the default and stopped broadcasting their signal. It's bad enough that these people let their wireless signals be broadcast, but they also leave their routers with the default admin password.
I figure that once I stopped using their network nobody else would be able to and I left their network secure. If they ever got the brains they could reset their router if they needed to add another computer or change some settings.
GOD BLESS AMERICA
I started to post about default router names and passwords, and then deleted it as it was getting too long. Yeah that is bad for sure, but that was a nice thing you did as I'm sure very often people would enjoy causing harm instead of protecting them.

A Devil's Advocate with a moral compass. That must be a handicap.
I was the one starting the yelling last time I believe. You did ok in that case (in my opinion), but I still think you should have left a message to make them aware of what's happened (assuming you never found out which neighbor's connection you were using; If you knew who it was, you should have explained to them face to face), for the educational value. Given the fact that you believe you acted morally, there should be no fear of (legal) consequences.

I call it pathetic.
If someone leaves their door to their home unlocked, does that give you the right to enter? Actually no, and there is law for that (probably also in NZ). Of course locking your door when you are not home is highly recommended because there are more people around with similarly less developed ethical sense.
I'm not a lawyer but I think most legal systems will give ample opportunity to prosecute your behavior, in case it is detected.
Abusing someone else's stupidity just because you can is deplorable. There is always the possibility that you have your own stupidity blind spot somewhere. What would you think of people, using that blind spot to your disadvantage?

Put yourself in that guys shoes. What if he found someone was deliberately hijacking his connection. Not by accident, but making a concerted effort to actually travel to the location in order to get free internet. You just want to hope he doesn't find out, because he kight just lick seven shades of sh!t out of you, and who could blame him.

Why do you think that might be relevant? If I do the occasional speeding, does that invalidate my comments on your reckless driving practices? Do you require a proof of sainthood before you might actually reconsider your behavior on the basis of my remarks? Your set of morals are your own, if you think you are within the law, you should use your own moral judgement, not mine. I'm just letting you know what I think of your behavior in the context of my moral values, while adding that you are breaking the law, and you should worry about getting caught, next to perhaps rethink what the difference is between being opportunistic and stealing.
However, eager as I am to share my superior set of morals with you
, I think less than 10% of all software I own (and that is in terms of number of software packages, so the OS is just one package) is pirated, and that includes shareware that continues to operate after the trial period is over. So there is your proof that I'm not a saint, o and I do run the occasional red light and do some occasional speeding as well.
I fully recognize that it takes a certain amount of money/income in order to stack your computer with all software you want in a legitimate way, but I really see a lack of sense of morality in a lot of younger people today with regard to what you would like to have but don't have the money for, so you just take it, because you can. Software Piracy is damaging and hurting others, amongst which me as a legitimate software owner, because I get to pay higher prices for my software. It may not be just younger people btw, but in terms of software piracy and digital tresspassing and illegal usage of resources, many if not most older people would not have a clue, the old other/other bunch excluded of course.

And you have many more lessons to learn yet (as do I). A next step is to loose the euphemisms (like calling yourself "opportunistic" ), to look beyond the almost instant gratification of your material needs (short term) and to confront yourself with the (possible) consequences of your behavior (long term).
