Hi Guys,

I need a new card to replace my geforce 2 pro 64 meg. I'm around the $150.00
range. Where can I find a chart that compares the nvidia cards? Tom's has
some but not all?

What is an "LE" version and can a lower version of a chipset be OC'd to
equal an ultra or?

Appreciate any help!

I forgot to add that I'm still running a P3/800 for now but do plan on
upgrading someday. I mainly need this to run a RC flight simulator called
reflex xtr.

If you are going to spend $150 you might as well get something up to date.
I suggest a 6600 or 6600GT. Then the question becomes AGP or PCI-e. Might
also be a good time to think about upgrading the cpu, motherboard and ram to
a PCI-e config.

Bob, if you are going to spend $150, you might as well bite the bullet and
go another $70. Otherwise you might as well get a $70 card. Well it
might be less now, maybe $200. I bought mine a few months ago when the
AGP version 1st came out.

1st - you need to make sure you can use an AGP card. It is a bit
different in size than the regular PCI slot (It is called a PCI slot ??!!
- I forget). I am not sure about P3s. The newest form of a BUS is PCE-E,
or PCI Express.

But make sure you can use a AGP card - or else you are going to have to
find a card that is the old still plain PCI (again, I think it is called a
PCI slot). My computer has one AGP slot and maybe a lot of 'em do.

The best bang for the buck there is, is the nVidia 6600 GT. I recall on
the box it mentioned minimal system's, and I am pretty sure your P3 was
listed.

The 6600 GT outperforms the 9800 Pro, the previous $250 champ. It is
comparable to the $400 cards even, like even it's own cousin, the nVidia
6800 GT.. The 6800 GT does a little better for sure, but if you ask me
not worth paying double. Also the computer you use may not be able to
take advantage of a $500 card anyway. The 6600 GT only uses 128 MBs of
RAM. A lesson here is don't get goggle-eyed at video cards with 256 MBs -
it is the technology that is more important.

Now, I have not been following in this newsgroup since I bought my card.
I found out that the specs that were being posted on the Internet for the
AGP version, and even here in this newsgroup, were not the same for my
card. I am talking the power it uses - the power supply needed. It is
probably the manufacturer's little thing, because there are so many
companies that make these puppies. When I bought my card, it was being
said a 300 watt, or was it 350 watts (can't remember which) was minimal
and would work. People were talking about an extra power connection after
you put it in a slot you had to connect. Well, I bought mine and
installed it. No extra power connecting wire needed. Worked fine until I
ran an newer game at a good resolution, and that means the card was going
to kick-in and do it's stuff. Well it crashed every time I started one
up. Finally I looked on the box, and wouldn't you know it - 450 watt
minimum power supply!!? It all worked great after I bought a 500 watt
power supply (another $50) - but I am telling you this in case there are
6600 GTs that will work with 300 watts and then those like mine that need
450 watts. Better look no matter what card you decide on.

...D.

Now, if you buy a computer in the future, it may have a PCI express BUS on
it. Then your card will not work in it. So that is another consideration
you need to take into account.

Geez he said his budget is 150 so keep it at 150 how about the following
cards:

Raedon 9800 128mb $125.00
Radeon 9600 128mb $82.00
Geforce 6200 128mb ? (probobly 90-130 or so)

My sentiments exactly - with his CPU/BUS/RAM, there is NO reason to get a
6600 of any sort.

That motherboard might not even be able to use any of the newest AGP cards
even if it has an AGP slot - it's probably an AGP 1x/2x slot, and will only
use 3.3v cards. No new cards will work, as they are most likely 0.8v,
possibly 1.5v.

Thanks, Guys

It's an Abit BH-6 with the agp slot that requires 3 slots in the card. I
bought a Radeon 9600xt? and it wouldn't work because it only had 2. Most of
the nvidia cars look like they have the third slot.

How does a 5700 Ultra compare?

thx

What about this one:

Better than an fx5700 Ultra?

I guess it's reall about whta will work in my Abit BH-6?

As I suspected. No new cards will work in it. All of them will need the
3-section AGP slot. Time to save up and replace that computer, methinks.

Not even a fx 5200 or 5700? They have the 3 slots?

Hey Raceface, you are correct. I had not noticed that before so thanks for
pointing it out. Let me clearify this whole situation. It all has to do
with which cards will work in a 3.3 volt agp slot (which your BH6 has) and
which won't. It turns out that none of the GF6 cards will do it. All of
the FX cards ARE compatible. On the ATI side, things get real screwy. It
seems that none of the 9600 Pro or 9600XT cards will work but the 9800 and
9700 series will!

I guess it boils down to some cards having 3.3 volt support and some don't.
So now it's time for the big decision. Get a FX 5900XT or ATI 9800 Pro or
replace the motherboard (plus cpu and ram) and make the jump to PCI-E.

That's a nice card (for the price). It's better than a FX5700 Ultra and it
looks like it will work in your board.

Dave,

So how do you know for sure if a card supports the 3.3 volt?

It's the gaps in the edge connector that determines it. If the card has a
gap close to the bracket it's a 3.3 card. If it has a gap far away from the
bracket it's a 1.5 volt card. If it has both gaps then it is compatible
with either one. There is also a .8 volt card but the AGP 3.0 spec dictates
that hey be compatible with 1.5 volt slots.

Dave,

It actually looks like my agp port is the Universal one shown at the ATI

According to Abit, th e BH-6 is AGP 2X. Does that help?

What third gap? There can only be two gaps (in video card edge connector)
for a maximum of two dividers or keys in the agp slot. A universal agp slot
would have no keys in it. The BH6 (I also have one of those boards in my
little boy's computer running a Tualitan Celeron 1.4 ghz) has a 3.3 volt agp
slot. It has one key in it, closest to the bracket.

Look at the universal card, 3 gaps.

That last gap (the one farthest away from the bracket) is not a gap. What
you are seeing is the locking tail. It is a small "L" shaped piece of the
card that hangs off the back (it does not go into the agp slot) and is used
to lock that side of the card down. It works with a feature of motherboards
produced with the last three years that have a lock mechanism built onto the
agp slot. I once setup, I think it was an Aopen motherboard that had a
strange sliding mechanism on the agp slot that took me a while to figure
out.

I know Dave

Look at the Universal card vs. the 3.3v card and the AGP 3.0 (1.5v .8v)

Don't you see the 3rd gap? The other 2 only have 2 gaps

I bought an ATI 9600 and it Physically wouldn't fit because of the missing
third gap. I must not be explaining myself very well :-O
