How did you guys pass that race?
I'm getting desperate. They say 'Don't rush, be patient, spare your car',
but heck, if I don't rush I just can't catch up with the leaders, still less
overtake them.
I tried getting out and blasting the leaders, but they respawn. I tried
popping their tires from a M4, but they keep driving all the same...

Good luck. I've never been able to do this one, with or without cheats.

The tip is right: Slow and steady wins the race. Familiarize yourself
with the track, try to avoid the walls, find your groove and go. Most
of the turns don't require brakes, just feather the throttle.
If you can, PIT those you pass.

I have won this a couple of times now, but it can take quite a few attempts.
The only real difficulty is keeping your car alive to the end. When you get
familiar with the course, you will find there are plenty of inside turns
where it is easy to overtake. Avoid braking on the bends, just ease off and
tap your forward key through them. Watch out for the big pile up just after
the start and try to avoid the side of the track where most of the cars end
up. Get to know the places where the guardrail suddenly has points where you
rebound off and take damage. You can PIT some of the cars as well to get by
them, but only do this at a point where you will only spin one car out and
not take too much damage yourself.
Once you get in front, just look after the car until the end. You will come
across the last placed cars eventually. They are easy to pass if there is
just one, but be careful if there is a group of them, there is nothing worse
than being well in front and getting your car spun into the rails and
exploding on lap 12 by a back-marker.
If I failed on this a few times I would go away and do something else and
come back later and try again. I'm not sure, but going away and doing
something that increases your driving skill rating (vehicle missions,
perhaps) may help with handling the car better.
I found this one much easier than the hotring race in Vice City.

it may have to do with the initial first turn out of the start,
banking against the guys. that will be followed by the pile-up
on second turn. if you can jump the lead, and shoot thru the pile-up,
it's all about pacing, and the turns. i found that out first 100%,
which took easily 5 times. camera angle quick rotation revealed the
lack of need for braking, the turns are wider than they appear.
there is one turn with a sharp wall to avoid.
in the pacing of the 12 laps, it appears car position 2 is there
to impede your performance. it may help to last out the race even if
he passes you for a 2nd place finish. once the track is memorized, and
the initial jump, 2nd turn pile-up, pacing, camera angle vs. braking,
and 2nd place intimidator is memorized, it will make it easier. it is
a difficult race at first, but on your second, etc.
play-throughs it will feel more comfortable. it definitely is easier
than many other challenges or events in comparison.
different experiences for different players.
i had to learn the dirtbike stadium race the hard way as well,
memorization of racers, pile-ups, and the turns, etc.

And there we have the two tasks that are keeping me stuck on 98. something
%. :-(
Damn I so want that Hydra in the Grove.

The one is much easier than past races.
If you're used to racing games, you'll have no problem.
I think early on you have to be reasonably aggressive to overtake.
If you're not in the middle of the pack by the middle of the race
you'll probably need to restart. If you're spending ages fighting it
out in the middle, the leader will already have established an almost
unassailable lead - just like real life.
I did mine AFTER I finished the game so my driving skills were good -
did it 3rd try which was also the 3rd time I've seen the track.

I sympathise with you.
While I found 8-track to be rather easy perhaps due to the fact that I
have years of experience in car simulation, the dirt ring race is
kicking my ass.
I just cannot make the Sanchez fast...
I don't get it either, my motorcycle skills are maxed out!

I've beaten it!
Thank you, guys, for the detailed -- and ever so valid -- advice. My mistake
was changing the camera angle to show more road ahead. It turned out to be a
distraction rather tnan help.
Boy, did my fingers tremble when I had taken the lead on the tenth lap. And
that tune about Stalin's personality still rings in my ears... On to the
Dirt Ring!

I worked out that the CPU controlled cars *ALL* slow down for the same
bends. Memorise this and take care not to go into a powerslide when
negitiating corners and you should do fine.

The major trick that I got when I was stuck on this one as well, as how
to pass the cars. Always pass cars at the inside of the track! This
prevents them from fishtailing you, and you won't lose much speed in
overtaking them. Also, there's a large double corner at some point in
the track where you can go full speed without having to break or release
the gas; this is where you can get ahead of the others.

also, if you're feeling adventurous, you'll find using the 'pit' manoeuvre
helps :-)

Oh yes indeed! Good point.
