I have two monitors on a 5200 Gforce and
I'd like to see how a third works. Should I
buy another Gforce or another card with
Nvidia chipset? The 3rd monitor is for menus
and directions in PDF format so there won't
be any avis playing or anything else too
intensive. I guess it has to be a PCI card
since I have the other card in the AGP slot.
Thanks

You will need to purchase the Microsoft Plug in eye Kit which gives you a
third eye in the centre of your forehead.

This will allow you to view the 3 monitors at once.

There is also a downloadbale patch which will allow you to use winamp to
sychronise your eye blinking to any music you might happpen to be playing at
the time.

The patch is free.

Aside from the MS add in mentioned before, Yes, definitely stay with the
same chipset and match the generation as closely as possible, MX/FX/GX on
the PCI bus.

I would have thought the opposite based upon my experience trying to use two
ATI cards at same time (as versus a dual-head). Nothing but trouble. I ended
up using an old Matrox Mystique alongside an ATI 7200 in one pc and a
Xpert2000 with a Cirrus Logic "something old" in a 2nd pc, both running
98SE. I also run dual-monitors in my newer pc using a TI4800SE (is
dual-head) but haven't tried any other additional card with it (don't have
one "free" right now).

I second that. The older Matrox Millenium/Mystique PCI cards have great
quality video output and can be picked up for next to nothing on ebay.
I've used a Millenium to add a second output on two different systems
with no problems. Mine wasn't such a bargain price - cost me around
£300 back in early 1996 - about 100 times what they go for now!

Not in this case. Nvidia has 3 monitor capability built into the driver as
long as the driver can work with both video cards. In the Display
Properties Box you'll see 3 monitor icons in the properties window where
you can attach or detach as you like. You can assign the different displays
via the Nview Properties. Definitely a plus if you have complex operations
going.

For the driver to work with all three monitors, do you agree that the cards
should be the same generation? as in FX 5200?

The 3rd monitor is a 21" for viewing tools and tutorials, etc. No video play
back.
Does that make a difference?

Thanks so much. I really glad to have you guys here to help.

Some cross generations will work together but that can be an expensive
gamble. While it looks like the TI4800 should work well with an FX5200,
it's still a gamble. I do know that if it were my money, I'd defintely
stay within the generation.

No the monitor model or version will not be a problem. You will be able
to tweak each display to your liking.

I found a GeForce 5200 PCI for $83 at Office Depot.
The drivers for both cards loaded at the same time. There
are some irregularities like sometimes the Nvidia extras
don't load and I got a blue screen a couple of times but
it looks like a go...

but the third screen didn't add a lot and it's actually a little
embarrassing which I didn't expect.

Know what you mean. I tend to leave my 2nd display(s) disabled until/unless
actually using them. Doesn't seem so "pretentious".

In my case, it's 2 pc's each running dual-monitor; plus the ATI/Matrox rig
also has an old Commodore monitor used for TV-Out off the ATI card which can
be enabled at same time. Hence 5 displays "can be" active at once.

Just to add one thing many don't know, something I found out years ago when
I need another LPT port and only had an old Hercules monochrome card around
that had one on it.

There was (and believe still is) a time when one could have both a
CGA/EGA/VGA card in system alongside a "mono" card, e.g. old Hercules (or
clone) in what was called "half-mode" or "text mode" but NOT "full mode"
(dictated graphicvs and memory capabilities). The old DOS commands "MODE
MONO", "MODE CO80/CO40" switched between which was "alive". What was nice is
that doing so didn't clear the display that became inactive. That hardware
mix still works upto Win98SE (last I've checked). If you open a DOS prompt
Windows on such a pc and type MODE MONO, the monochrome screen will become
active with a full sized 80 col/25 line text mode, blinking cursor and all.
Assuming the old DOS program is setup/installed properly, they'll usually
even work this way!!! Meanwhile Windows (on the VGA display) has just left
your little DOS window alone, you can move the mouse away and change focus
to another window at any time, then move back and re-activate the DOS window
(which retained it's mono full screen mode) etc. etc.
