71.84 Temperature Issue

Like a lot of others, I've noticed that idle temps increase with the use of
the new drivers - from about 55 to 65 C. Also noticed that overclocking it
(currently from 350 to 401) reduces the idle temps to about what they were
with the older drivers. Problem is that on reboot, the idle temp goes back
to 65 degrees. Played around with the 2D frequency settings and noticed that
by underclocking them the idle temps are decreased and stay that way even on
reboot. In fact, in underclocking the 2D to as low as possible (about 88),
the idle temps are back to about 55 degrees.

Question: Does it really matter what the 2D frequency is set at - even as
low as 88? Can't seem no notice any performance decrease in 2D apps like
Web, email, office apps, etc. Frame rates in Doom are still fine, in fact
almost 10 fps faster with the 71.84 drivers vs the last ones.

Any thoughts or comments on this???

TIA

I have heard that you need to clock the 2D to at least 400. Don't know if
it is true or not, but mine is at 425 and the temp is 54C.

Do you have a BFG card with the custom (dual-fan) cooler? I have that, and I
have 80-81 C idle temps with 7x drivers.

I've got an EVGA 6800 GT card and I believe the original 2D clock was either
300 or 350. Default 3D was at 350. I've got it running in 3D at 401/1.11.
Got the 2D bottomed out at 88 - yest that's not a typo - 88. Now the
Idle/Load temps are running 52-55/75-80. There doesn't appear to be any
adverse effects from running 2D that slow and it sure results in much lower
idle temps.

How do you overclock it with these drivers?

Are you leaving the memory overclocked in the 2D settings, or are you
bringing that down to minimum as well.
Have tested it on my 6800GT (reducing down from 400 to 88) and temp has
dropped from 71 to 64 also with no noticable performance hit.
Isnt there an issue about running the 2D and 3D settings out of sync?

The answer is yes - memory overclock stays the same whether 3D or 2D. It's
my understanding, at least with coolbits, that the memory speed steeings
can't be different between 2D and 3D. In other words - whatever it's set to
in either one ports over to the other.... I might be wrong.

As for your other question about out of sync - I don't know. Glad to see
that it dropped your temps for you.

NVIDIA's release notes for the 71.84 driver state:
---

GeForce 6800: The 'Temperature Settings' in the Display Properties
reports an approximately 20% higher temperature than with the previous
driver version.

This issue will be fixed in the next driver release.

---
I guess we neurotic temperature-checkers just need to learn, if it
doesn't crash, it's not too hot.

Get the 71.90 driver.
Problem solved.

Stupid question: Is this incorrect temperature reporting cosmetic
only, or is the temperature ACTUALLY increasing on the 6800 cards with
the 71.84 drivers?

If it's just a cosmetic problem with the driver, then I'm all over
installing them. But if it's not, then I'll hold out until nVidia
releases the next stable driver.

It's not just cosmetic. With 71.84 I'm getting artifacts when playing games
with my 6800 GT which indicates that the temperature reading being displayed
is correct and is higher than normal. When I was using the 66.93 driver I
didn't have this problem, temps were normal and no artifacts in 3D. I hear
it's been fixed in 76.41 (available from Guru3D) although I haven't tried
this version yet.

I agree with Homer Simpson (LOL). From all I've read in various forums
it's a real temperature increase. I'm sticking with the old drivers
till they get this straightened out with new official drivers. Nvidia
somehow thinks it's OK to bump up your GPU temps with a flawed driver
release and still admit the mistake without doing anything. Very strange.
