Is the Geforce 6600 (non-GT) faster than the Radeon 9600Pro?

Sometimes the "best bang for the buck" isn't a big enough bang. The 256mb
6800GT costs a lots less than a 6800 ultra or ultra extreme and gets nearly
all of the performance possible today from a single card. Specifically the
BFG 6800GT OC is probably the best choice here with a slight (20MHz) higher
clock rate, dual cooling fans, and only one slot used. I also find it nice
and quiet in its current model. The original version had the radial type
fan. The new one has two axial fans.
With a 1600x1200 TFT, I can play all of my games at 1600x1200 with good
performance. Of course if you have a 14" monitor at 800x600 or something,
then a lesser card would perform adequately for you. You need to look more
at your expectations of performance rather than just at value/dollar.

The 6600GT looks like a good choice, although it's not cheap (>$175 US at
Newegg).
Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

Thanks for posting that article. I have a 9800 Pro in my main computer, and
while I'm not looking to replace it anytime soon, I wanted to see how it
stacked up against some of the newer offerings using the same test bed.
This article was a very good read.

Been doing some reading, and the best bang for buck card are in the
following order:
