6800GT crash after running 3D Mark 05

My 6800GT crashes after running 3DM05. Weird thing is I think it always
completes the set number of loops I specify but seems to crash when
returning to the desktop. Often it's OK if I run just a few loops, but 20 or
so and I'll get the crash which results in an driver infinite loop. Message
is somthing like CheckDeviceFormat failed D3DERR_INVALIDCALL. Anyone seen
this? I've tried a number of the latest driver sets but they all seem to do
it.

May be the GPU is getting too hot after a number of looping.
