After several months of successful access to my residential gateway [RG]
from a built-in wireless network adapter in my IBM T41 ThinkPad a problem
has suddenly developed whereby I am unable to access the RG; I am able to
access it from a second machine that I have ... also with a wireless network
adapter. Now when I single click the icon in the task bar for the wireless
connection on the failing machine the Wireless Network Connection Status
window comes up and when I click on the Support tab the TCP/IP settings I
see are all wrong. The Address Type is "Automatic Private Address" ... the
IP address is "169.xxx.yyy.zzz" [the xxxx, yyy and zzz values are valid but
I prefer not to display them here ... the Subnet Mask is 255.255.0.0 and the
Default Gateway is blank. These values are not correct ... but I don't
know how to fix them. On my other (non-failing) machine these values are
"Assigned by DHCP" ... 192.168.1.6 ... 255.255.255.0 and 192.168.1.1
respectively. I have run hardware diagnostics on the wireless adapter in
the failing machine [it is an Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI
Adapter] and all tests passed. Can someone suggest what properties/settings
I should set that will correct these values? As near as I can see I have
things set properly ... eg. Obtain an IP Address Automatically is selected,
as is Obtain DNS Address Automatically.
I am beginning to think that although the hardware diagnostics did not show
a problem that indeed there IS a problem with the wireless adapter.
Thanks for whatever assistance may be forthcoming.
