Hi all,

I posted recently about purchasing a 6600gt. How much better is a 6800gt
over a 6600gt in the real world, and is it worth the extra cash (about
£100)?. My system specs:

XP 2000+, 512mb pc2700, sb audigy 2 zs.

Would it be overkill for my system?

Any help appreciated.

It may indeed be overkill for your system, considering the slower speeds of
your other components will probably bottleneck the system.

It would be an overkill for your system but you'd still see a cca 40%
increase over the 6600GT,and this way you're upgrade proof should you
decide to upgrade your CPU without changing the graphics form
factor(AGP>PCI-Express).
In a 3000+ system a 6800GT is twice as fast as a 6600GT.

Yes, but what would really hurt is when you go to upgrade your MB next
year, and find only three "value" MB's to choose from, because you
bought an expensive AGP video card and don't want to toss it with your
old MB.

I have a 6800GT and I think I'm CPU/Ram(latency) bound.
P4 3.0E gHz(800 fsb 1meg L2) 2 gigs (4 x 512meg) PC3200 in dual channel
at DDR 400 with TB Santa Cruz noisemaker.

Have similar system, but only 1 Gig Ram and OC'd to 3.3 Ghz @ 220 FSB. I too
am CPU bound up until about 1280x1024 Res. Then you can see a noticeable
frame drop indicating CPU is no longer the bottleneck.

Where the game allows it, I run in 1280x1024. It's the native res for
my LCD's. Thing is, how is the drop in frames showing the CPU is no
longer the bottleneck?

You're right - I don't think I stated that quite right.

Let's take two cards (6600 and 6800) and place them in identical systems
(let's say slower systems). Start benchmarking the framerates of each
system starting at 640x480 and gradually increase resolutions. The system
with the 6600 will see the frame rates drop at lower resolutions than will
the system with the 6800. This is because the 6600 will be stressed easier
than the 6800. Now let's take the same system with the 6800 video card. You
may see it maintain the same frame rates from 640x480 all the way to say
1600x1200 indicating that it's CPU limited as you would never reach a point
where the video card would have a problem keeping up. In other words the
video card in this system would be overkill.

It took me a while to understand it and I still might not be saying it
right.
