I'm new to Pocket PC's and wi-fi.
I recently connected a 802.11g access point to my office network and have
been able to browse the web and send/receive emails using my Ipaq.
Is there a way to configure the email so it can use a different
authenticated outgoing smtp userid/password. The built in email software
always tries to use the same userid/password as for the pop3 incoming mail
server. I have my own outgoing mail server provided by the company that
hosts my domain - I'd like to use it so I don't have restrictions on using
it from any connection. Is the PPC 2003 second edition going to address this
or should I look at 3rd party email solutions?
I'm not able to browse folders on another networked PC using the file
manager on the Ipaq, when doing an Open for a UNC name (eg, \\pcname\share).
I just get a message back saying 'unable to connect, check your connection',
but the connection is fine.
I'd like to be able to synchronise the Ipaq over the wi-fi network with my
desktop PC. Is that possible? It looks like I should be able to do it with
bluetooth but I'd prefer to use wi-fi.
Finally, is it possible to send files to a networked printer? I haven't seen
anything on the Ipaq that would allow you to print something. Is a 3rd party
solution needed for that?

Not sure about this, have you logged on to the network using the
username and password that you would log on with on your desktop
machine? Maybe install the Resco File Explorer. It performs a network
search for local machines when you want to map a network drive. It may
provide more useful information

Make sure that you have the "Allow network[Ethernet]....." option
selected under File/Connection Settings in active sync on the machine
you want to sync with.
With your IPAQ start active sync and go to Tools/Options. Have the name
of your machine selected in the "use this PC" drop down dlgbox. (you
will need to solve your pc browsing problem first) Then tap the Options
button and deselect the "Enable PC sync using this connection" Then OK
out of everything.
This has worked for me.

Download and install HP's mobile print application.(sorry, can't
remember the URL) I couldn't get it to work directly with print servers
even when entering their IP address and port numbers. However, I shared
a printer on my desktop that was networked using a print server. This
then looks like an ordinary locally connected printer on my desktop. I
could then find the printer and print from my IPAQ

I have had a lot of trouble with norton internet security, despite
that I put the correct IP range in "Trusted" zone.
Is there a firewall on local PC´s at your place?

Many thanks Rob, I've followed your advice and have been able to connect to
my file shares and sync via the network. I couldn't find the HP mobile print
application directly. I found a reference to the "hp mobile printing for
pocket pc" user guide (pdf) in the hp.com support site. The pdf pointed me
to http://www.hp.com/go/pocketpcprint_software where I was able to select
the version and download it. Unfortunately for me, I'm not able to configure
a printer as the software supports some HP, Canon and Epson printers only. I
use a Okidata Pageplus20 laser printer which is attached to a print server.
Does anyone know if I can persuade the mobile print software to work with
that printer?

No software firewall issues for me. I use a hardware firewall that protects
my lan. got it work by going into settings, connections, connections tab,
advanced tab, select networks button and changed the 'Programs that connect
to a private network' from 'Bluetooth Settings' to 'My ISP'. There is an
entry for 'My Work Network' too, but I'm not sure what the difference is
between 'My ISP' and 'My Work Network'.
