If you ask in an NVidia newsgroup, what answer do you think you are
going to get?

Given the complete lack of your requirements, nobody can answer that.

Given your detailed requirements, I would definitely recommend one or the
other.

Don't ever put your e-mail in a newsgroup or you will be spammed.
Put cordell dot brownell at boooomail dot com

Neither. What you really want is a 3dfx Voodoo 6. Hard to find but well
worth the search.

I had an nVidia card for years. My recent new machine has an ATI on the
PCI-Express bus. I've already had to replace the card. ATI cards tend
to under perform nVidia, plus they have no Linux drivers. I will be
replacing this card soon with something in the 6600 line. I will never
buy ATI again. Ever.

At the moment, nVidia rules the roost. During the days of the
9700/9800Pro versus FX, ATi ruled performance.

In general, nVidia is considered better on Linux... primarily because of
the Quake based OpenGL games available for it. :)

That's your choice.

Personally, I prefer ATI at this point in time because I've had positive
experiences using older cards with newer drivers. ATI's unified driver set
seems more solid whereas I find nVidia is good only if you are willing to
upgrade to always keep your video card current-gen or risk having software
or features becoming broken. To be fair, I've heard reports of older games
often being broken on and off with ATI's drivers, but I have not come across
such an issue myself. I think at some point both ATI and nVidia are going
to have to look at how far back (in terms of video cards) they want to write
drivers for.

Depends. ATI makes very good cards but in the past often had problems with
their drivers (but that got better during the last years).

If You want very good OpenGL, Nvidia is the superior choice...

If You want Linux, Nvidia also might be better because they offer a better
Linux support than ATI...

If it's just for gaming, either ATI or Nvidia can be a good choice...
