Hi.
Please HELP. If it's not one thing it's another!
I'll try not to waffle but give as much detail as possible.
We started off with:
D-Link DI 624 router
D-Link DSL 300g+ modem
1 Pc (A) cabled to router
2 PCs (B & C) wireless Air PlusXtreme G adapter
3 laptops wireless Air PlusXtreme G adapter
All XP
All McAfee AntiVirus
XP Firewall disabled on all machines.
Everything worked really well for a few months. Then connection started to
drop more and more often. A lot of the time not reconnect by itself until
one day couldn't get it to work at all.
Called support (several times) and to cut a long story short they deduced
that there was a problem with the modem and said to send it to them for
repair. Still waiting for replacement.
In the meantime, I hooked up the Wireless router to a spare Wired router
(Dray Tek) in order to use a spare USB modem. (this is how we had it set-up
for months before when we first switched to wireless, but we ended up
getting the D-link modem because we couldn't use voice on MSN
messenger )Worked fine with no problems at all. for couple of months.
But now were having major dropping problems. This time we reconnect
automatically and sometimes you don't even know it. But it's constant, in
the middle of chatting on MSN messenger, (in fact that doens't restart at
all). So we thought maybe we had too many Pcs on wireless, although
initially it all worked so well for months.
So we cabled 2 laptops to the router, D-link (because the DrayTek is only a
pass through for the modem) cabled Pc 'B' to the router to act as host (as
it's in the same room as the 2 laptops, and switched Pc 'A' to wireless. At
first it was a pain as every few minutes all wireless machines would die
from the internet and not see the network, so I had to 'factory set' the
d-link router, over and over again until it finally settled down. Took
almost a whole day.
So we now have
Pc 'B' cabled
2 laptops cabled
Pc 'A' & 'C' and 1 laptop wireless
All cabled machines working like a dream. Fast and no dropping.
PC 'C' connects to the internet for a second and then can't connect AT ALL
and only sees the network intermitently eventhough the little green thingies
show 'signal strength good'. That pc is on the second floor. But signal was
excellent when we first became wireless.
PC 'A' which is in the next room to the router, shows signal strength going
between good and poor but even when it's good browsing the internet hangs
or doens't load or takes ages and checking these posts on OE, the connection
dies and says can't connect to server so I have to keep trying for a minute
or so. And MSN just disconnects constantly. There's no pattern. it can be
logged on for hours and then in the space of one hour can be disconnected 5
times.
Driving me nuts.
These are my questions
Why was the wireless so good in the beginning and so poor now?
Could I be so unlucky that both modem and router have problems?
Have I screwed up somewhere?
Is it something that I can sort out????
Should I chuck out the Wireless router and go back to all cabled??????
Should I hang myself????????????
