When I install an AGP GEforce card my computer freezes up after a few
minutes. I used a Max420
PCI card and didn't have this problem.
Does anybody have any ideas?

TIA,

My first guess is you got a bad card. Does it have a fan? If so is it
turning? Try another power supply.

Thank you for your speedy return. I tried both suggestions and neither
worked.
Thank you again.

Scrub all the drivers off with http://www.drivercleaner.net/

Re-boot and re-install drivers.

If it doesn't work after that, you've probably got a hardware problem.

Suggestions:

Try system with with your GEforce 5200 board without starting any
applications. Does it continue to operate when the system (and the AGP
adapter) are not generating very much heat? Does the GEforce 5200 card come
with a program that monitors the temperature, checks cooling, allow
overclocking, changes settings? Check the temperature of the air inside the
system case. Do any of these test seem to indicate a heat problem?

If you have access to another system and/or to another AGP adapter, try
* install your GEforce 5200 card in another system - does it operate
correctly?
* install a different, known good, AGP adapter in your system - does
it operate correctly?

Start the system in 'Safe' mode. Does it run without problems? If not,
then the problem is not with the software installation. If it does run in
'Safe' mode, then the driver installation is suspect (though there is small
chance that heat could be the problem.)

Since you opened the case and fooled around inside, you may have dislodged
some connectors. Open the case and carefully check each conector. Try
running system again.

There is a good chance that your new card may be defective. Quickly make a
decision on whether or not to return the card as defective.

Have You tried a clean install of everything (I mean a format of the hd and
a fresh OS)? If that doesn't help, the hardware is becoming VERY suspicious,
but before tryin' it, I would not really dare to draw a conclusion.

Good luck!

Rene

That's a terrible suggestion. And you don't even know the operating system

No, I mean 'Rene' doesn't realize that Windows XP Pro has system restore.
He can just roll back to a time before installing the new display adapter.
That's another reason reformating and reinstalling the operating system is
not a useful idea; it's more like using a hammer to seat your CPU.

Hi all,
Thanks for all the suggestions. Believe it or not I've tried all. I now
suspect the AGP slot as being defective.
Will run a PCI video card for a while.

Thanks again,
Irwin Opper

Try disabling advanced agp settings in bios like side banding and reduce
the agp speed frå 8x down to 4 or 2 and see if this helps.
