Forceware 77.72 issues on Winxp pro

Hi all.

I have the 77.72 release installed on my Win xp pro OS.
Graphic card is Asus EN 6600 GT.

While playing Deadly Shadows suddenly the screen went blank and pc crashed,
and the Out of Range monitor warning appeared on my screen.
I had to reset by pressing the case button and spent a lot of time argueing
what it could have been.
I debugged the crash dump and the faulty driver was "nv4_disp.dll"
Then, I ran the driver verification utility (verifier.exe) and checked this
driver manually to no effort: the system always crashes.

So, it seems beyond any reasonable doubt that the latest nvidia drivers have
compatibility issues with xp.

Has anyone experienced the same situation? Any volunteer to run the verifier
utility?

Just in case anyone tries the verification utility do not forget to create a
restore point and/or reboot in safe mode to be able to reboot again normally
and then stop the utility from continuous checking.
Another way is to reboot using the last valid configuration.

Thanks for any help,

Stefano

Thanks for your answer but I did not overclock it; it's running at the
default values (in an air conditioned room).

Ah, no he means that Asus overclocked it as their factory default. And,
even though my rig runs in an air conditioned room, I keep the sides off
the cheap case and have a small inexpensive desk fan moving air through
the hot spots. CPU, Vid card and HD's. Without that fan and the sides
off, things DO get hot in there, even when my room is 65 F. Might
consider checking those items?
(and no, it isn't noisy at all :) )

Oh well, I suppose (better say I hope) Asus considered it before selling
it...
anyway the issue arises even on a cold started system and nvidia temperature
settings show up as 50-52 degrees, celsius.
Motherboard and inner case temperature is normal, 35-45 celsius degrees and
therefore I hope that's not the problem.
A quick glance at the new beta drivers release notes shows a "General Issues
solved with the new release: All GPU's, fixed a memory allocation issue that
caused general instability in a variety of games".
I am afraid it's my case :-(

Thank you for your reply,

Stefano

And let me guess... There was no issue with a previous driver. I would say
that proves it, but maybe it's just an issue with that particular game.

I can say for sure that there are issues with the 77.72 set. The 77.76
beta release notes purport to fix 2 of the issues I've seen. One is the
overbright gamma. Haven't seen anything about the temps tho :)

Conor left a note on my windscreen which said:

77.72 are not beta - they are release and WHQL certified.

77.76 are currently beta.

To say the truth, I don't remember.
I'll explain: my pc itself is a brand new one (one month lifetime) and after
I installed the previous drivers I had to format and reinstall OS for
another reason. After the new install I discovered the new release of nvidia
drivers, so I hadn't enough time to test the old release.
About the "particular game", I daresay that the statement from nvidia ---All
GPU's, fixed a memory allocation issue etc---,above mentioned, clearly
demonstrates that it is not just a single game problem...

At last, that is what I really hope...otherwise I'll have to unistall one of
the most appreciated games (by me) I ever had.
My former pc was not powerful enough to play Deadly Shadows with :-((

I hope the new drivers will be released soon.
Anyway, anyone willing to run the driver verification utility? It's not
difficult to recover from the system crash (takes one minute and a restore
point)

Stefano :)

Sorry, my bad. Read 77.72 and got 77.76 in my head for some reason.

Bonjour,

Why don't use constructor drivers?

Merci.
