Also, I have an extra DSL modem which I cannot get it to work. When I ordered DSL from Verizon, first they accidentally sent me a Westell DSL modem. Then they told me to return that modem because they are sending me a Fujitsu speedport DSL modem. Of course I didn't send them back the Westell modem because I hate Verizon. (BTW, they didn't charge me for that modem anyway). I have been using my Fujitsu modem and one day, I decided to switch the DSL modem to the Westell they sent me (brand new, never used). My DSL didn't work, so I went back to the Fujitsu. Is there a way I can get the Westell modem to work, because having two different modems from Verizon is kind of nice and I hate seeing the Westell modem sitting in the box. Thanks in advanced.

did you power everything off before swapping the modems (including PC)?

Yes, I powered everything off, including the computer. Then I unplugged the connection of my Fujitsu modem and the wires, and replaced it with the Westell modem and the wires that came with that. Then I turned the computer on. The modem automatically turns on when you give it power. My DSL is always on. I don't need a password or anything. Anyways, when I got to my desktop, I opened IE, then Netscape. I didn't get my home page (yahoo) or anything, just an error page. I thought maybe the Fujitsu modem was programmed with some kind of code or something and the Westell modem doesn't have it. What do you guys think? Should I try it again....

So you're saying you don't have PPPoE (not using WinPoet or something similar? Anyway, check if you got an IP address (ipconfig at a DOS prompt). If it's 169.254.X.X then you didn't get an address. If it's something else you got one.

I don't have a user name or password to get connected to the internet. My DSL is alway on. Once the Fujitsu modem is powered, then I can connect to the internet (though I wish the Fujitsu had an on/off switch...oh well). I did the "ipconfig" thing with the Fujitsu, and I did get an IP address. I switched the modem with the Westell DSL Modem (this one as a power on/off button on the back, which I like), did the "ipconfig" thing again and I got 169.254......etc., so I guess I didn't get an IP address. Open IE and I got "page cannot be display." Press the "detect network connection," and I got a pop-up screen of "no connection detected." Reboot the computer, did again and got the same thing. Switch back to the Fujitsu DSL modem, and I can open my IE browswer and surf like crazy.

There has to be a way to get the Westell modem to work, No? Do you have to use the DSL modem that the DSL company (Verizon) give you for free when you subscribe? What about people who has DSL and buy a DSL modem at the local store? Like I said, when I ordered DSL, first Verizon gave me the Westell, then told be to return it (which I didn't), and then they gave me the Fujitsu speedport modem. Are modems coded or something??? Thanks for your help!

nope - any modem will work as long as it's ADSL. I have Verizon (BA/PPPoE) and have used a number of different ones, all successfully. Right now I'm using the Westell 890-36R5

Question: What do the lights look like on your Westell? Also if you try it again try doing ipconfig/renew at the DOS prompt and see if you happen to get an address. Other than that the only other thing I can think of is the Westell is broken. In which case you probably could return it to Verizon for a new one.
