Why does NVIDIA only detext DirectX 3?

Running Windows 2003 Enterprise SP1. I have a ChainTech FX 5200 which is
supposed to have DX 9 onboard.
I recently upgraded to the latest drivers - 77.72 and now the NVIDIA program
says that my system only has Directx 3.
dxdiag.exe reports DirectX 9.0c.

My games stopped playing with error that says that at least DX 7 is
required.

How could NVIDIA have gotten this so wrong?

Thanks in advance and a round of drinks on me!

Not an answer to your question, but why are you playing DX games on an
enterprise network operating system?

Tried re-installing DX9? I don't understand what you mean by "onboard DX9".
DX9 is software made by microsoft that runs features o the video card.

I did try reinstalling DX9, but the install goes VERY fast, and says it is
complete.
I guess the DX9 setup recognizes that DX9 is already installed. Why does
NVIDIA not recognize this?
When I roll back to the NVIDIA drivers that came with Win2003, it recognized
that DX9 was there, but when I upgraded to NVIDIA v77.72, it recognized DX3.

Any ideas?

I think you just answered your own question: it's an nVidia driver bug,
unless...

Not to insult your intelligence, but you didn't install the Win2003 Server
x64 drivers by mistake, did you?

What does nVidia say about driver support for Windows 2003 Enterprise? And,
if you uninstall the drivers, what does Windows update offer as a download
for nVida drivers?

IIRC Windows 2003 defaults to disabling a bunch of the video
acceleration features. Go into the Display control panel and crank the
slider up to full. (Sort of like how they also disabled all sound output
by default..)

It's been a while, but my recollection is that the DX9 install comes
in an .exe format that is actually a self-extracting archive that
dumps then contents into a folder off the root of C:. Maybe it's not
really installing but just extracting? Try extracting manually (using
WinZip or WinRar) and then executing from the folder you extracted to.
